AluaSoul Mallorca Resort

Scene

Lively, all-inclusive hotel

A row of neatly trimmed hedges marks the entrance to the all-inclusive AluaSoul Mallorca Resort, a gleaming white property with a vintage 1960s facade that's stood the test of time. Most guests are here to spend time outside and the hotel's prime setting perched just above picturesque Cala Elgos is a major draw. The hotel's seasoned origins means that it was built far closer to the sea than was later legally permitted. This also means the hotel is taller than is now permitted, making for some striking views from the upper floors. Next to the beach, the property also overlooks a loud and lively pool and an entertainment area that's shared with the strikingly similar sister property directly opposite.

Location

Set right on a picturesque beach in Cala D'Or's quiet Cala Egos tourist district

The hotel is set right on pretty Cala Egos beach in the tourist area of the same name, located just south of Cala D'Or and across from its marina. The neighborhood is almost entirely geared towards the vacation crowd who descend upon the area each summer, and is practically closed over the winter months. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, and souvenir shops within a short stroll of the hotel, though the atmosphere is quiet and serene, with minimal noisy nightlife. A train-shaped resort bus stops a few minutes' walk away and connects to various other parts of the area, including Cala D'Or center and Cala Ferrera. Palma de Mallorca Airport is just under an hour's drive away, while it's just a little longer to Palma's quaint Old Town.

Rooms

Rooms with spacious balconies, most overlooking pool and beach

The hotel has 214 rooms with just one standard room type and decor that doesn't vary. Mini-fridges and air-conditioning are included in all rooms. In-room Wi-Fi is available for a fee, but is spotty, and safes also cost money to use. Interiors are generally clean and well-maintained, and all rooms open to spacious balconies, most of which overlook the pool or the lovely cove. Those on higher levels have views of the sea beyond. Due to entertainment throughout the day, those overlooking the pool will pick up more noise, and rooms overlooking the road actually tend to be quieter. Bathrooms are roomy and feel more modern than the rooms, with wall-mounted hairdryers and shower/tub combos.

Features

Two swimming pools, one with lively poolside entertainment, plus buffet dining

Besides the beautiful cove and beach, the main focus of the complex is the pool terrace next to the beach, which features a large pool with plenty of poolside activities and entertainment. Constant music also makes this the most lively -- and noisy -- spot in the complex. A second pool is also a decent size, but quieter. Both pools have poolside bars. Mini-golf, beach volleyball, and a tennis court are free for guests to use.

The all-inclusive plan covers breakfast, lunch, and dinner served buffet-style in the hotel's only restaurant. While some guests are satisfied by the quantify and variety of what's on offer, many guests have not been impressed with the food. Snacks and drinks are served throughout the day by the pool, and all local drinks are included -- there's an extra charge for international brands. Note that there are no fitness or spa facilities on-site and Wi-Fi is available for a fee, but connections can be spotty.
