Bottom Line

The 193-room Fergus Geminis is an all-inclusive hotel located a five-minute walk from beautiful Playa Palma. There are two main categories of rooms: refurbished rooms with modern style at a budget price, and un-renovated, no-frills standard rooms with blue bedspreads and tube TVs. Proximity to a bus station and car rental shops make this a good hub from which to explore other parts of the island, and there's plenty of entertainment and shopping accessible on foot. There are two outdoor pools, a pool table, and a casual bar and restaurant on-site. This hotel offers a much better night’s sleep than similarly priced, more party-centric hotels in the area, like Caribbean Bay Hotel.

Oyster Hotel Review

FERGUS Geminis

Scene

No-frills, value, all-inclusive hotel

From the outside, the Fergus Geminis looks like a huge peach industrial rectangle. Inside, it has a huge lobby with brown marble floors, mirrored columns, a large seating area, and a few stray books. There is a conference room, but this hotel doesn't have much of a business atmosphere. It is popular with cyclists and young European tourists, especially German ones. This no-frills hotel has a beachy vibe, but some guests complain about noise from a young party crowd.

Location

On a back city street, near a lovely but crowded beach

Despite being located on the backstreets of El Arenal, a somewhat grimy part of the city packed with three-pearl all-inclusive hotels, bars, restaurants, touristy beach shops, and many European (predominantly German) tourists, the hotel is just a five-minute walk from an often packed, but beautiful beach. Though not a very private beach -- in peak season, it is usually mobbed with tourists from all over Europe, and very few Spanish people -- it is an impressive one. The waves are usually mild and the sand is a stunning shade of white. For as much traffic as it gets, it's also kept clean, though expect to be in the company of a boozy young crowd enjoying sun and beers and sometimes blasting music at the many beach-side bars. One big advantage of being located in the city is that getting to places like Aqualand (10-minute drive), the Palma Aquarium (10-minute drive), Central Palma (20-minute drive), and the airport (10-minute drive), is easy, and there is also a well-served bus station just outside the hotel. The abundance of small shops and eateries nearby provide a lively atmosphere.

Rooms

An upgrade to a Double Superior is well worth it for a fresher feel

The Double Superior rooms are refurbished and tastefully decorated, with a crisp white bedspread and striped accent pillows. The accent wall behind the bed is a relaxing shade of beige. The artwork is pleasantly contemporary and there is a flat-screen TV. Equally appealing, the bathrooms have modern fixtures and a sleek all-glass shower, but no tub. The long beige drapes in the bedroom feel a bit bland, but open out onto a charming balcony with views of the ocean in the distance, and abundant greenery in the forefront. Only 50 rooms in the hotel have been renovated to this level, though, and Standard rooms are not decorated with the same modern taste -- they are dated with blue bedspreads and tube TVs.

Features

Two pools, bar, and restaurant

Fergus Geminis is an all-inclusive hotel with two nicely maintained pools, each lined with abundant loungers, a few umbrellas, and even a nice grassy patch that's popular for sunbathing. A kids' pool, billiards table (for a fee), and table tennis round off the hotel's recreational offerings. Like most all-Inclusive hotels in Mallorca, the Fergus Geminis has an entertainment schedule, though it isn't as packed as that of larger hotels -- guests are more expected to be able to entertain themselves. There is a restaurant and bar on-site.
