Bottom Line

The 60-room Hesperia Ciutat Mallorca offers little to set it apart from its competitors. Aesthetically, the property has seen better days, barring its meeting rooms, restaurant, and fitness center, which feel fresher than the rest of the hotel. Rooms are acceptable for a mid-range hotel and have spacious bathrooms, large windows, and balconies overlooking nicely landscaped gardens. A 15-minute walk from the bay, the hotel is also conveniently located near a large shopping center, but its views disappoint. For a similarly classed property with a pool and magnificent views of the bay, the nearby Catalonia Majorica Hotel is worth considering.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hesperia Ciudad de Mallorca

Scene

Relaxed, business-oriented hotel; exterior and lobby in need of updates

The Hesperia Ciutat Mallorca feels a tad tired both inside and out. The white trim below each balcony is turning unpleasant shades of green and gray, and the lobby doesn't do much to restore confidence in the property's ability to stay modern; its decor lacks personality. The hotel was likely grand in its heyday, though a serious makeover would be required to recover any real luster. Today, the property is geared towards the business crowd, and its meeting rooms equip it to host professional events. The restaurant and its outdoor terrace are the most redeeming features, and seem nicely suited for informal business meals and casual conversation. The pool area is also well-maintained, and rooms are nice and bright.

Location

Nestled in the quiet neighborhood of Bonanova, a 15-minute walk from the bay

The Hesperia Ciutat Mallorca is surrounded by nature and a few other hotels in the calm area of Bonanova. While many of its neighboring properties have stunning views of the bay, the Hesperia offers limited views. It is within a 15-minute walk of the water and Mallorca's famed Club del Mar, which offers several marine activities including a sailing school. There is a Carrefour supermarket and a shopping mall with 140 stores within a 10-minute walk of the property, though the city's main attractions -- namely the historic center and the Seu Cathedral -- are best accessed via bus or taxi. The Palma airport is a 20-minute drive away, and can also easily be accessed via public transportation.

Rooms

Simple rooms with balconies, spacious bathrooms, and flat-screen TVs -- but bland decor

The rooms at the Hesperia Ciutat Mallorca are bland overall, but have redeeming qualities such as flat-screen TVs and the occasional splash of colorful artwork. However, the bedspreads need updating and the furniture is IKEA-esque. Nices-sized balconies with garden views are a plus, but on higher floors, they also look down over dirty rooftops. Bathrooms are spacious, with shower/tub combos, hairdryers, simple toiletries, and towels that could use replacing. Overall, the rooms are dated, but clean and nicely maintained.

Features

A lovely restaurant, pool area, attentive landscaping, and decent meeting room facilities round out features here.

From an aesthetic perspective, the Hesperia's restaurant is its absolute highlight -- it's modern and has colorful and playful accents. Food from the breakfast buffet is beautifully displayed, with huge frosted ensaimadas (a typical Mallorcan pastry) and stylish glass pitchers with multiple varieties of juice. Otherwise, the pool area is average, but well-maintained; it's surrounded by lush landscaping that, in addition to feeling tropical, adds a good amount of privacy. Painted a cheerful shade of green, the fitness room only has a handful of machines but gets wonderful natural light. The hotel's three meeting rooms are uniformly white and bland, but can be transformed into theater mode and accommodate up to 60 people.
