Hotel Cala Sant Vicenc

The bold red-ochre facade and Mediterranean mansion architecture of the Hotel Cala Sant Vicenc certainly makes for a distinctive presence. The entrance under its wood-beamed portico, however, is deliberately unassuming, with access through a pair of large wooden doors complete with brass knockers. The result is the feeling of arriving into a private residence, and the reception area emphasizes this sense, with its welcoming blue sectional sofas, cushioned wicker chairs, bookshelves set against bright yellow walls, and colorful tiled floors. An extensive and eclectic art collection completes the picture. Floor-to-ceiling windows create plenty of light and overlook a manicured garden and pool terrace. 

Despite its warm and comfy vibe, the property has always been a hotel -- dating back to the 1930s, it's one of the area's first. Its last full renovation was in 1998, and the lobby and restaurant were renovated in 2017. It was previously an adult-only hotel, and although children are now allowed, the vibe is still grown-up. The calm and relaxing ambience here appeals to the older vacationing couples that make up the majority of clientele. 

The hotel is set in the center of the village of the same name, Cala San Vincent, one of the smallest resorts in Majorca and located in the northeastern corner of the island. Within five minutes away on foot are the two main sandy beaches, Cala Molins and Cala Barques, with lovely clear waters and golden sand. The hotel was built on a fairly steep hillside and is divided by a rocky outcrop, which means lots of climbing steps and walking up and down sloping footpaths. There are a handful of decent restaurants within walking distance, as well as grocery stores and a couple bars -- though don't expect much in the way of nightlife. The pretty town of Pollensa -- with its cobbled streets -- is about 15 minutes' drive away, while the popular resort of Port de Pollensa is around the same. About 25 minutes' drive away is the unspoiled beach of Formentor, and accompanying stunning views. Palma and its beautiful Old Town can be reached in just under an hour by car, as well as Palma de Mallorca Airport.

There are just 38 rooms in total (including 17 Junior Suites), all decorated in similar styling. Decor combines homier elements such as stripped curtains and comfy seating with traditional chunky wood furniture and terra-cotta tile floors. All but a few open to balconies with pool or mountain views, four extending to huge terraces with loungers, though none have more than a glimpse of the sea. Guests get a free bottle of wine, fresh fruit, and water on arrival, though the mini-fridges are empty and there are no coffee- or tea-making facilities. Other amenities include 32-inch flat-screen TVs (with a wide choice of UK-based channels) and free, super-fast Wi-Fi, plus robes, slippers, hairdryers, and pool/beach towels. Bathrooms are tiled in traditional Majorcan fashion, all with shower/tub combos (with clingy plastic shower curtains), bidets, and quality L'Occitane toiletries. Safes come standard. 

Breakfast is a highlight, with an excellent hot and cold buffet as well as eggs cooked-to-order, all included as standard. While breakfast is served in the hotel's colorful and chic restaurant (renovated in 2017 to include lots of Mallorcan tiles on the floors and bar, light wood beams on the walls and ceiling, modern white tables and chairs, and ikat-cushioned benches), most guests choose to take it on the outside terrace which overlooks a quiet road and distant mountains. A half-board option also includes an a la carte menu for dinner with dishes and ingredients focused on local cooking and produce. The restaurant is also open to the public and features an impressive wine list of 60-plus wines; while the food is good quality it's a bit on the pricey side. Room service is available until late

An outdoor swimming pool is long enough for a decent swim, as well as providing a small splash section for kids (reports suggest the unheated water can be a bit chilly). The pool terrace is lined with plentiful loungers, with more dotted around a well-tended lawn shaded by palm trees. Lunch can also be taken on the poolside terrace. There are a fitness room and sauna, but both feel tired and are in need of renovation. Cyclists also have access to secure bike storage (accessible directly from the street) which includes tools and work bench. The hotel's Cycle Concierge can help with cycle/helmet hire, maps and routes, packed lunches, and post-ride massages.
