Bottom Line

The Hotel Colon Palma is a 36-room value hotel in the center of Palma. Though far from luxurious, it's a clean, unassuming place within walking distance of Palma's main transport hub, which makes it a convenient base from which to explore the city and other parts of the island. Some rooms are tiny, though they are all cheerfully decorated with small flat-screen TVs and plenty of natural light. The Superior Rooms come with whirlpool tubs and small private sun terraces. For more spacious rooms and a nicer dining area, the nearby Hotel Abelux is also worth looking into.

Hotel Colon Palma

Scene

A clean and central place to sleep on a budget

Everything about the Hotel Colon Palma is tiny: the reception area is tiny, the restaurant is tiny, and even the rooms are pretty small. Far from memorable, it's simply a conveniently located but no-frills property in a working-class part of Palma. Clean and modern, though unassuming, the Colon has a friendly, family-oriented feel aimed at budget travelers who don't plan to spend much time at the hotel. Its location near a major public transport hub makes it an especially practical base for anyone who needs easy access to public transportation for moving around the island.

Location

Local neighborhood feel, a short walk to Palma's major transport hub

An eight-minute walk from Mallorca's Plaza de Espana and the Intermodal bus and train station -- Palma's main transport hub -- the Hotel Colon Palma is optimally placed for strolling around the city and making trips to other parts of the island. While it's not in the swankiest part of the city, the surrounding area has a charming, local feel, with plenty of small shops, bars, the occasional Chinese buffet, and inexpensive cafes. While the area lacks the luster of the Born district, for example, it is safe, unpretentious, and pleasant to stroll around. The Hidropolis urban thermal baths are a seven-minute walk away.

Rooms

Bright, fresh rooms with small walk-in showers and plenty of natural light

The rooms at the Hotel Colon Palma are small, but functional. Red and orange accents keep them feeling playful, while a basic decorative theme of crisp stripes and large windows that let in plenty of light keep the spaces feeling fresh. All have flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, safes, light-wood furniture, and matching parquet floors. Bathrooms are clean, though the stall showers with white plastic curtains are disappointingly petite. Superior Rooms are worth the splurge for the extra space, and they come with hot tubs for two and small private sun terraces with lounge chairs.

Features

A few friendly touches and a breakfast area in need of a makeover round out features here.

As a tiny value hotel, the Hotel Colon Palma doesn't have much to distinguish it as far as features go, though certain touches do make it more welcoming than the average value hotel. The lobby has a small book corner where titles can be borrowed or swapped. There's also a computer nook -- with just one computer -- and plenty of maps, brochures, and assorted tourist information. An array of potted plants scattered throughout the lobby/sitting area adds some familiar charm. The dining area is unimpressive and institutional, with dated boardroom chairs and no natural light. Wi-Fi is free in common areas.
