Bottom Line

The Hotel Golf Beach is a 36-room budget hotel located in the center of Santa Ponsa and five minutes' walk from its sandy bay. Despite the name, the hotel doesn't really have any connection to golfing, and the local course is hardly accessible on foot. The property is, however, clean and well-maintained with a sunny swimming pool area and bar/restaurant that serves all-day breakfast for an added charge. Guest rooms are certainly basic. They lack air-conditioning and TVs, though the rooms are spacious and all open to balconies. Rock-bottom rates make this one of the best deals in town. For renovated rooms and beach access, the Apartamentos Portofino y Sorrento also provides a good budget option.

Hotel Golf Beach

Scene

Well-managed budget hotel with spotless interiors and a sun terrace

The peach-toned Hotel Golf Beach sits firmly in the budget category of hotels. Built in 1968, the property was extensively renovated in 2011 and management has kept everything well-maintained since. The lobby is the typical combination of polished stone, marble, and tourist brochures. Although undeniably basic and dated, interiors are spotlessly clean and most guests agree that staff are friendly and attentive. A single elevator services the hotel's four floors, and to the rear is a sunny pool terrace. Brits make up the bulk of the clientele; mostly couples on a cheap break. The hotel does welcome group bookings, but noise and rowdiness is not tolerated.

Location

Set in the center of Santa Ponsa, a short stroll from its sandy bay

The hotel is positioned on a long and fairly busy strip of local shops and restaurants in the popular resort of Santa Ponsa, on Majorca's southwest coast. While centrally located and just a five-minute walk from the town's large, sandy bay, it's set away from most of the nightlife, so is relatively quiet. Most of the bars and clubs are on the north end of the resort, around 10 minutes' walk away. There's also a small and quieter beach, Caló d'en Pellicer, about five minutes by car, and Santa Ponsa's golf course takes around the same time. The charming cobbled streets of Palma's Old Town and the Palma de Mallorca Airport are under 30 minutes' drive away.

Rooms

Simple guest rooms have balconies, but no TVs, toiletries, or Wi-Fi

The 36 rooms are mostly spacious and completely clean, though they're certainly basic in both style and amenities. Decor is minimal with gray tile floors, textured beige walls, and wood veneer furnishings that look a little dreary and dated. Twin beds are pushed together to create a double bed. All rooms open to balconies set with patio-style furniture. Outdoor spaces overlook either the road or neighboring apartment blocks. In-room amenities are very limited, with just telephones, old-fashioned safes, and ceiling fans (which can struggle to keep rooms cool in hotter months). TVs, Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning are not available in rooms. Gray tiled bathrooms are clean and functional, and feature shower/tub combos and white marble sinks. Bring your own toiletries. Hairdryers and mini-fridges are available for rent from the front desk.

Features

All-day hot breakfast and outdoor swimming pool

There are two options for breakfast at the hotel. There's a fairly simple buffet breakfast of the usual meats, cheeses, yogurts, cereals, and toast available on a street-facing terrace. Guests can also order a hot all-day breakfast. Both breakfasts cost extra. The bar serves draft and bottled beers, as well as happy hour for a selection of cocktails. Free Wi-Fi is available at the bar/restaurant. The hotel's outdoor pool is just about large enough for swimming laps, and there are plenty of loungers and a poolside bar.
