Lago Garden Hotel

Guests are greeted in a stately lobby at the Lago Garden Hotel; a bright and airy space encircled by arched windows that overlook the lush greenery outside. A centerpiece sculpture on a bed of white pebbles is surrounded by elegant columns, and the creamy hues of the room are brightened by floral print couches and armchairs. The hotel's restaurant features a fairly generic style, but there's also a lovely outdoor dining space with wicker furniture set on a wooden deck among trees and greenery.

The highlight here is the hotel's grounds. The property is surrounded by charming gardens full of lush greenery and trim lawns. Paths meander past tall trees and colorful flowers. Different species of bird provide pleasant background noise. The hotel's three swimming pools are set amid the flora, providing pretty spots for a dip or a soak in the sun.

The hotel attracts both families and couples and it does a good job catering to both. Kid-friendly amenities like a children's pool, playground, and kids' club make little ones happy. Extensive spa facilities are ideal for adults seeking some relaxation. The majority of guests here are German, as Cala Ratjada is a popular destination for Germans. Overall, though the Lago Garden Hotel doesn't quite live up to its self-proclaimed five-pearl status, it's a solid upscale choice that's suitable for a range of travelers. 

The hotel is centrally located in Cala Ratjada, a Mallorcan resort town that's popular with German tourists. There are many dining options, bars, and some shops within walking distance, and several other hotels and resorts in the immediate area. The nearest beach, Cala Moll, is a seven-minute walk away. The port area can be reached in about 10 to 15 minutes on foot. Other nearby attractions include the historical towns of Capdepera and Arta, which are a 10- and 15-minute drive, respectively. The capital, Palma, lies to the west of the town on the opposite coast of the island and can be reached in about 70 or 80 minutes. Palma de Majorca Airport is a bit over an hour away.

Though decor differs among the room categories, all of the spaces have a stylish, contemporary look. Tasteful neutral color schemes are brightened up by subtle pops of color in the form of pillows, armchairs, lamps, or fresh flowers. Some rooms feature chic damask wall accents that match the bedspreads and pillows. Other rooms showcase wooden furniture that displays an artfully weathered look. Junior Suites feature living areas, while Family Suites and Superior Suites have separate living rooms with sofa beds. The Imperial Suites are the most spacious offering at the hotel, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, two living rooms, and two terraces (each with its own whirlpool tub).

All rooms open onto private balconies or terraces, many of which overlook the lovely gardens -- though some have lackluster views of the street. Other standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, telephones, and free Wi-Fi, but there are no tea- or coffee-making facilities. Bathrooms also differ in style: some feature coral marble, others are sleekly clad in gray, and some combine mosaic tiling with pretty floral accents. Bathrooms include whirlpool tubs and separate rainfall showers (some have outdoor tubs on the balconies and terraces). Wall-mounted hairdryers, magnifying mirrors, and toiletries are also provided.

As far as features go, the highlight is the hotel's wellness facilities. The extensive spa offers a sauna, whirlpool, Turkish baths, ice fountain, and aromatic showers. A variety of treatments is available, including thalassotherapy, hydrotherapy, phototherapy, facials, massages, and nail services, plus there's a hair salon. There are three lovely outdoor swimming pools on the hotel's charming grounds -- including a kids' pool -- that are ringed by lush greenery and offer stone or wooden sundecks lined with loungers. The fitness room provides a handful of dated machines grouped together in front of a flat-screen TV. The hotel also offers five clay tennis courts.

Breakfast is included in all rates, and guests note that an extensive selection of items is offered. Half-board rates are also available. The hotel has a buffet-style restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as a bar and chic outdoor snack bar. Room service is also available.

Kids are catered to with a charming outdoor playground that includes slides and swing sets. Neighboring ping-pong and pool tables offer some entertainment for older kids or parents. There's also a kids' club with an indoor play area. Other amenities include meeting and event space, free Wi-Fi, and free on-site parking.
