THB Cala Lliteras

While there's little to find fault with at the THB Cala Lliteras, there's also not much to get too excited about either -- that is apart from the setting. The first glimpse of the superb bay views are through large windows stretched along one side of an otherwise underwhelming reception area. Like most of this '60s-era chain property, lobby lounge decor all feels rather lackluster and slightly dated -- the last major renovations were in 2008. While certainly in need of an update, interiors are generally very clean and well-maintained. Just off reception is a small patio with comfy seating overlooking the quiet street. There are several elevators that provide access down to the pool area, a pleasant sunny terrace and -- thanks to a 2016 update -- the property's newest-looking space. Next to the pool is a small grassy park area with trees providing some extra shade. Most clientele hail from Germany, with the rest made up with Spanish, British, and French guests -- we noticed it was mostly younger couples during our visit. 

The THB Cala Literas may have sea views but, like all the hotels in this neighborhood, it doesn’t have a beachfront location. However, barely two minutes away on foot is the eponymous cove with a tiny patch of sand, a bustling bar terrace, scuba center, and crystal-clear water perfect for snorkeling. About a 10-minute walk along a coast footpath brings guest to picturesque Cala Agulla, a long stretch of sand backed by protected woodland. A few minutes' walk from there is a street lined with restaurants and laid-back bars, while most of Cala Ratjada resort's nightlife is centered around the harbor, about 15 minutes on foot. The hotel is set on the island's most easterly point, and you can see Minorca on a clear day -- though this also means that it's at least 75 minutes by car to Palma de Mallorca Airport. 

All of the hotel's 201 guest rooms are similar in size and layout, but views differ. The vast majority open to glass-fronted balconies offering full-frontal or lateral sea vistas, and only a handful don't have at least some glimpse of the water. Last refreshed in 2008, decor is decidedly dated, with wood-effect laminate flooring, basic wooden furniture, and signs of wear here and there. Multiple Gustav Klimt prints help add a touch of sophistication. 

Rooms are individually air-conditioned and all come with 38-inch or 40-inch flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and old-style safes (for a fee). In-room Wi-Fi is free of charge, though it can be patchy and a little slow, and there are no kettles. Although updated at the same time, bathrooms feel more modern (albeit a little small) with square sinks, wall-mounted hairdryers, and generic chain-brand toiletries; showers are mostly walk-in with removable rainfall showerheads. 

While not comprehensive, the THB Cala Lliteras has a solid selection of facilities. The outdoor pool is certainly a highlight, large enough to rarely feel crowded with whirlpool and kids' sections, plus a mushroom water feature. Plentiful comfy-looking sunbeds and umbrellas line the pool terrace (redone in 2016/17), and a poolside bar serves drinks and ice cream. Behind the lawn area are volleyball and tennis courts (free of charge), though there's no animation program and minimal child-friendly facilities -- making for a more peaceful and chilled-out pool vibe. There's also no wellness facilities on-site.

Breakfast is always included in the rate and served in the hotel's bright and functional dining room, and includes the usual mix of continental items, freshly brewed coffee, and eggs, bacon, and sausages. Lunch and dinner are also covered in optional half-board or all-inclusive plans, with regular themed buffets and live cooking stations. Guests report food quality ranging from adequate to excellent, though there's no a la carte option and snacks tend to be uninspired. The main bar opens to a shaded poolside terrace and hosts nightly entertainment by professional musicians. Wi-Fi is free throughout, but connections can be spotty.
