Bottom Line

This shabby, but clean, hotel with severely outdated rooms is one of the only budget options in Portals Nous. Slightly saggy mattresses, ancient TVs, and blonde lacquer wood furniture that wouldn’t look out of place in a hostel make for somewhat gloomy rooms, though some have nice views of the water. All rooms have a kitchenette including an electric stovetop with a double burner, and a small concrete balcony. There are a handful of recreation options for both kids and adults in the form of game areas, and the outdoor pool is lovely. Full- and half-board meal plans are available. Those with a little more room in their budget may want to consider the nicer Salles Hotel Marina Portals.

Oyster Hotel Review

Tomir Portals Suites

Scene

Large and anonymous '70s-era midrise building with terraced levels

Anchored by a sparsely furnished marble-accented lobby with a few blonde wood lacquer chairs, the hotel's rooms are situated in white mid-rise, terraced towers that recall the reinforced concrete of post-industrial housing. The reception area is pleasant enough, with the occasional vase of decorative foliage, and, though plain, the hallways are similarly outfitted and aren't unattractive. The recreation areas, which are vast, span both the indoors and outdoors, and include a drop-ceilinged room with a handful of video consoles for kids. A tiled plaza holds a pool and some game options for adults; it resembles the common area of an apartment building. The paint on the terraced balconies is visibly fading. Most of the guests here are European families and couples on a budget.

Location

On a roundabout in a residential area

Situated up a hill on the way out of the town of Portals Nous, the Ola Aparthotel Tomir sits on a narrow one-way street within a cul-de-sac that is lined with small apartment buildings and residences. Seven minutes on foot will bring access to a small clutch of casual eateries, while a full 20-minute walk brings strollers to Puerto Portals marina, with waterfront dining, and the sandy Oratori Beach.

Rooms

Granite flooring, dorm room-like furniture, and old TVs in rooms with balconies and kitchenettes

There are two types of rooms here: Studios and Apartments, both of which contain a kitchenette with a double-burner electric stovetop, a tiny sink, a mini-fridge, and a basic set of cooking implements and utensils. Apartments include an extra room with a sectional couch that can be used as a bed. Lighting isn’t a strong suit in these rooms, each of which has just a couple of weak sconces. Tube-style TVs are mounted in the corner of the rooms, hospital-style. Air-conditioning is standard in all of the rooms. Cleanliness isn't a problem; while the furniture is drab, the premises are generally spotless. Striped pattern bedding is vintage and garish, and the low-quality wood chairs and tables look akin to hostel furnishings. Bathrooms have a full shower/tub combo and good water pressure Cups are wrapped in plastic, though toiletries aren't provided. Concrete balconies are furnished with plastic chairs and a table; the best rooms have gorgeous views of the port.

Features

Large outdoor pool, outdoor playground, computers for guest use, and a restaurant and bar

Features at the hotel are practical and convenient. Food is served buffet-style in a plain dining room with views of the water and an outdoor dining option on plastic furniture. Both full- and half-board dining options are available, though drinks aren't included in the half-board option. A cinema hall near the restaurant has a few entertainment options slotted to the side of the room, including a pair of massage chairs and a small handful of computers for guest use. Wi-Fi is available, but it's almost unreliable. An indoor games room harbors a clutch of video consoles, and there are some games for adults (pool, ping-pong) in addition to a modest playground. A large outdoor pool is flanked by a kids' pool and surrounded by a well-kept tile patio.
