Bottom Line

Artina Suites Hotel offers competitive prices and a no-frills, homey stay within walking distance of famous restaurants and nightlife spots around Makati Avenue. It features 41 spacious suites with microwaves, mini-fridges, plasma TVs and free Wi-Fi. A small restaurant and a meeting room is all there is in the way of amenities -- but freebies such as breakfast and on-site parking are good perks. Overall, the property offers good value, but light sleepers may want to request a room facing the rear of the building, as East Zobel Street is busy and loud.

Scene

A solid pick for families and business travelers on a budget

This all-suites property is a decent pick for budget-conscious families and business travelers. Artina is no-frills and somewhat basic overall, but it has great rates by Makati standards, and rooms have all the amenities expected of a mid-range property. It offers spacious suites with living areas and homey details -- such as microwaves and mini-fridges -- that can help save money. The lobby is bright, with large windows and a few wood accents that add some style to an otherwise basic and sparsely furnished space. The restaurant and the hallways on the first floor host temporary art exhibitions.

Location

Blocks from Makati Avenue -- but in a somewhat unattractive and busy residential area

The hotel is located on East Zobel, a narrow street a few blocks from famous Makati Avenue and the Pasig. This location is convenient for shopping and nightlife, but few attractions can be reached on foot from the hotel. There are a few supermarkets nearby, so guests looking to cook in their room won’t have to walk far. For those looking to try local restaurants, there are plenty to choose from closer to Makati Avenue. Intramuros -- the historic center of Manila -- Quiapo neighborhood, Rizal Park, the waterfront area of Roxas Boulevard, and the University of Santo Tomas are all within a 15- to 20-minute drive in normal traffic conditions. Ninoy Aquino International Airport is a 15 minute drive away -- but Manila is known for its heavy traffic, so guests may want to leave the hotel well before their boarding time.

Rooms

Spacious suites with microwaves and mini-fridges

The hotel offers 41 spacious double and triple suites, all featuring a large bedroom and a separate living area with at least a sofa and sliding wooden plantation shutters. A few rooms look a little tired and are somewhat dark, but all units offer nice homey touches -- such as microwaves and mini-fridges -- and solid amenities, including plasma TVs and free Wi-Fi. Premium rooms are arguably the best here, with somewhat nicer wooden decor, and up-to-date bathrooms complete with modern square sinks and rain showerheads. However, all bathrooms have the same problem: hot water can take a while to come through in the morning. Also, light sleepers may want to request a room in the back of the hotel, as Zobel Street is busy with jeepneys from the wee hours.

Features

A small, affordable restaurant, and a handful of nice freebies

The hotel is light on amenities. There is a small but decent restaurant serving Asian fusion cuisine in a space with black metal chairs and tables, and straw placemats. The large meeting room is equipped with a projector and free Wi-Fi, and tables can be arranged in different ways to adapt to the guest’s needs. In-room massages and 24-hour room service are available on request. But probably the best perks here are the freebies, which include breakfast, Wi-Fi, and parking.
