Bottom Line

The two-and-a-half-pearl Eurostars Astoria is a 57-room property in Malaga, located a 15-minute walk from the town center and the beach. There’s no pretense about it; this is a fuss-free, value hotel in a relatively solid location. Simple, clean, and compact rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and bathrooms with hydro-massage tubs. The property lacks most standard features, as there's no pool, full restaurant, or bar. Amenities are thus limited to a breakfast buffet (for a fee) and free Wi-Fi throughout. With little-to-no entertainment or business facilities, the clientele here is predominantly tourist couples who spend their days out exploring. Travelers looking for more stylish rooms might compare rates at the Room Mate Lario, which also has a seasonal rooftop terrace bar, but is farther from the beach.

Exe Astoria

Scene

Simple and fuss-free value base between the old town and the beach

The Eurostars Astoria makes no false impressions; it’s a fuss-free, clean, and simple hotel in a decent location, close to restaurants and bars, shops, and the beach. However, guests will need to try and look beyond the uninspiring exterior and immediate area, which is filled with graffiti and empty shops. The marble lobby is welcoming, but shows signs of wear -- a common problem for the hotel. This isn’t a place to spend lots of time, but tourist couples using it as a value base to explore seem to appreciate the clean rooms and its convenient location.

Location

Close to the old town center, walkable to shops, museums, and the beach

A quick 15-minute drive or train ride from Malaga Airport, the Eurostars Astoria has a convenient location in Malaga. It sits between a pedestrian esplanade that runs alongside the (often dry) Guadalmedina River and the Contemporary Art Center of Malaga. It’s around a 10-minute walk to Calle Marques de Larios -- a pedestrian street famous for its shops, bars, and restaurants -- and 15 minutes on foot to tourist attractions such as the Picasso Museum and Cathedral of Malaga, as well as Malagueta Beach. The airport is about 20 minutes away by car and 30 minutes by public transportation (the metro station is within a five-minute walk of the hotel).

Rooms

Compact rooms have air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi, but lack character and space

Rooms at the Eurostars Astoria are clean and comfy, with wooden floors, functional furniture, and simple decor that's certainly not the freshest we've seen.  Double Rooms are a compact 190 square feet (18 square meters), while Superior Rooms come in at 235 square feet (22 square meters). All are equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are a bit dated looking, and feature hydro-massage shower/tub combos, make-up mirrors, and wall-mounted hairdryers are provided. Some rooms have glimpses of Mount Gibralfaro and the Alcazaba fortress, though most views are across the street or dry riverbed to a number of high-rise hotels. A couple of higher-floor rooms have walk-out balconies. One room has been specially adapted for disabled access. Cots are provided free of charge for children under 3 and free beds for those under 12 can be arranged in some rooms.

Features

On-site buffet restaurant for breakfast, but no proper bar or pool

The Eurostars Astoria lacks most facilities expected of a beach holiday hotel; there’s no pool or fitness center. Guests can, however, eat at the buffet-style restaurant for a buffet breakfast with hot and cold options, though it's not included in rates. Although the restaurant can offer other meals, it tends to be for pre-arranged group dinners or business lunches. There’s free and reliable Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. There is no on-site parking.
