Bottom Line

The 11-room Villa Guadalupe is a family-owned boutique hotel perched high on a hill in a residential area outside of central Malaga. The charming, whitewashed property is bright, peaceful, and atmospheric, with an esteemed gourmet restaurant on the premises. Still, guests will need a car or be willing to take taxis to reach the beach, city center, or major tourist sights. The extraordinary views and tranquil surroundings make this a great location for travelers who don't need to be right in the center of things to have a good time.

Hotel Villa Guadalupe

Scene

Peaceful and art-filled, with good food and views, views, views

Villa Guadalupe has the feel of a Moorish-influenced villa with whitewashed Mediterranean style. The unbeatable views are the star here. The work of renowned artist Irene van Vlijmen hangs throughout the common areas and guest rooms; her paintings, ceramics, and sculptures are vibrant and bold, often featuring mythological or Spanish subjects. The artwork gives the entire hotel a contemporary, creative feeling. The decor -- wooden ceilings, white beams, and gorgeous picture windows -- echoes this creative vibe, along with the artistically presented gourmet food in the Restaurante Amador. Families with young kids may not find enough to do on the grounds, but couples looking for a romantic place to stay will be happy.

Location

Residential area in the hills, accessible by car but some distance from city center

Villa Guadalupe is located in a purely residential area, more than four miles from Malaga's city center. There are no shops or restaurants in the immediate area, and the nearest bus stop requires a 15-minute (hilly) walk. Central Malaga is about a 20-minute drive away, as is the beach. The area hills are challenging even for experienced walkers, and narrow for unfamiliar drivers navigating in a rental. Taxi or car are almost required if guests want to sightsee, but if transportation isn’t an issue, the views and peaceful atmosphere at the hotel are more than worth it.

Private balconies, airy rooms, and panoramic views

Rooms at Villa Guadalupe are open and airy, with marble floors, cool original artwork, and big windows featuring panoramic views of Malaga and the Mediterranean. Some guest rooms have private balconies, so put in a request. Some of the terraces are enclosed; others are open and sun-drenched, with lounge chairs for catching rays. The Triple Room has a second story with adorable porthole windows. There are also flat-screen TVs, in-room safes, and free Wi-Fi. Ask for a room away from the noisy elevator.

Features

Acclaimed gourmet restaurant, outdoor pool, and lovely terrace bar

The property's on-site eatery, Restaurante Amador, is recognized as one of Malaga's top 10 restaurants. Chef Amador Fernandez serves traditional Spanish cuisine with a twist, and the menu has both a la carte and tasting menu options. The pretty but small, mosaic-tiled outdoor pool is ringed with sun beds, beach umbrellas, and tables. The hotel snack bar is open and breezy, and El Patio Bar Terrace utilizes Moorish-influenced designs as well. Massages are available upon request.
