Bottom Line

The striking four-pearl Innside Manchester is part of the new First Street development, so there's plenty of entertainment all around, and it's a short stroll into the city center. It's a smart, modern hotel with a bright cafeteria-style restaurant that's popular with locals. There's a small gym, spa treatments, and several conference rooms, so it's a favorite for business travelers too. The 208 rooms are smart, and done up in sleek, dark decor and include free Wi-Fi and soft drinks. Premium Rooms and Suites add Illy coffeemakers, but trendy open-plan bathrooms in all categories won't suit everyone. Those looking for a more traditional layout and a bit more character could consider Abode Manchester. It has a more central location, though lacks the neighborhood vibe of the First Street area.

INNSIDE Manchester

Scene

Modern building in a recent development with a young, fresh feel and a buzzy vibe

Innside Manchester is an ultramodern building set just beside another -- the HOME arts center. In fact, the area is fairly recently developed, so everything is pretty shiny and clean, with wide pedestrian walkways lined with trees, and a buzzing vibe by night. Inside, the hotel is bright and airy, with contemporary, boxy decor that's softened with plenty of flowers, plants, and even a tree. The vast lobby also houses the open-plan restaurant and bar, plus sofa seating, and slatted stairs lead away to the rooms above. There's a young, fresh feel, and live DJs regularly fill the space with music, particularly on weekends. Guests are mostly young couples and small groups of friends, but business travelers also favor the stylish decor and convenient location.

Location

Up-and-Coming First Street location, close to Deansgate nightlife and within easy reach of top shopping

This sharp hotel is in the new First Street development -- an up-and-coming area south of the city center with a vast arts center and several restaurants. It's a five-minute walk west to Deansgate for the trams and numerous bars under the railway arches. Nightlife on Oxford Road is about the same distance to the east. A 10-minute walk takes you into the heart of the city, for designer shopping on King St., music venues such as The Albert Hall, and attractions including the Science Museum. It's about 15 minutes on foot from the hotel to more shopping on Market St. -- in the Arndale Centre and at Selfridges. Budget 15 minutes by tram from Deansgate to reach Old Trafford for football (soccer) matches. Trains from Deansgate connect with the Trafford Centre and Sealife Manchester in about 40 minutes. Buses leave from across the road with a similar transit time. Connections to the airport are best from Manchester Oxford Road station, a five-minute walk away. The trip takes about half an hour, or it's a 20-minute drive.

Rooms

Modern, minimalist rooms and suites with open-plan bathrooms

Rooms have a uniform contemporary style with dark carpets, deep purple feature walls, and chic line drawings of Manchester's skyline on the headboards. It's a smart, minimalist look, though certainly won't be for travelers seeking cute and quaint British style (admittedly this part of town isn't exactly known for that sort of thing). Cupboards hide away fridges with free soft drinks, safes, electric kettles, and irons, and rooms also feature flat-screen TVs, and air-conditioning. Wi-Fi is free and generally works well, though occasional complaints about connections have been lodged. Premium Rooms are more spacious, and have additional sofas, plus Illy coffeemakers, while Suites feature bedrooms with TVs plus separate living areas with corner sofas. Bathrooms are open-plan, which doesn't suit everyone, though toilets are enclosed. Standard Rooms have shower/tub combos with rainfall showerheads, while Premium Rooms have walk-in rainfall showers. Suites include separate showers and tubs, plus double sinks, though the shower position here is particularly indiscreet -- the frosted glass walls overlook the living area. All include hairdryers and toiletries.
