Bottom Line

Townhouse Hotel Manchester is a four-pearl property in a restored 19th-century heritage building, which was once a cotton warehouse before it was transformed into an upscale hotel with 85 stylish contemporary rooms. Higher-category rooms have Nespresso machines and Bose Bluetooth speakers, but unlike many of its upscale competitors, Townhouse Hotel Manchester has neither a fitness center, spa, or swimming pool, and rooms lack minibars. Travelers might want to check out The Midland, another upscale heritage hotel, which has a health club with a pool and squash court.

Townhouse Hotel Manchester

Scene

Impressive Victorian building with lackluster interiors

Townhouse Hotel Manchester is an impressive and imposing Victorian-era building with attractive arched windows, occupying a busy corner in central Manchester. Renovated in 2011, this heritage property once housed a cotton warehouse before its transformation into an upscale hotel. In contrast to its historic facade, the interiors disappoint. For such a grand building, the reception area lacks presence. Ceilings are low, pillars obstruct the space, and the lobby's sitting area is decked out in dated leather sofas, glass-top tables, and unattractive red-floral carpets. Guests complain frequently about the noise made by late-night revelers, and the sirens of emergency vehicles. The hotel, however, is popular with leisure travelers and couples on weekend breaks, as well as business travelers attending meetings in one of the hotel’s many function rooms.

Rooms

Rooms with tasteful contemporary decor and elegant bathrooms

The 85 rooms are decorated in a fresh contemporary style with walls painted in grays, shades of pale purple, and olive green, all accented by bright purple highlights visible in the armchairs, sofas, and bed runners. Large architectural prints provide a focal point, and tall windows let in lots of light while offering scenic city views. Compact bathrooms are decked out in elegant black wall and floor tiles, tub/shower combos with rainfall showerheads, and heated towel racks.

Room sizes here can vary widely. Classic Double Rooms tend to be somewhat cramped and lack storage space, but the higher-end Executive Double Rooms and Suites are much more spacious, and include sitting areas with comfy sofas, and Nespresso machines. Suites also have separate living areas, Bose Soundlink Mini Bluetooth Speakers, and larger bathrooms with dual sinks and separate showers and bathtubs. All rooms come with free Wi-Fi, an electric kettle for making tea and coffee, and flat-screen TVs.

There are signs that some rooms are in need of refurbishment: Stained carpets, paint peeling in shower, black grout in the shower, drainage problems, and scratched wallpaper.
