Bottom Line

The Carayou Hotel and Spa is sprawling, 207-room mid-range resort with two pools, a small man-made beach, a spa, and numerous water sports. Its peninsula location delivers double-sided ocean views and constant ocean breezes, ideal for kiteboarding and windsurfing. The rooms are basic but colorful, styled with French Creole accents and beach-inspired artwork and offering views of the gardens or sea from small terraces. The hotel's grounds and public spaces are vast but could use some attention, especially around the lobby. Those seeking a more intimate and stylish stay might enjoy the hillside Le Suite Villa or the more upscale beachfront Hotel Bakoua.

Oyster Hotel Review

A large resort with two pools, a beach, and multiple activities, including a well-stocked water sports center

Set on a peninsula in Point du Bout, Martinique's main tourist area, the Carayou Hotel and Spa benefits from its prime location. A constant breeze keeps guests cool and refreshed with the smell of the sea while windsurfers and kiteboarders can practice their skills right from the shores of the hotel, which has one of the best locations for constant wind on the island. For those not participating, the lively kites and sails bumping against the waves and the turquoise sea are interesting to watch.

The hotel is attractive mostly to budget-conscious families and couples who come for the beach, the pools, and the all-inclusive rates, which can be booked for breakfast only or to cover all meals and drinks. While the hotel offers plenty of free parking, having a car is not necessary as the shops and cafes of the Village Creole, the gentle waves of Anse Mitan Beach, and the ferry that shuttles to Fort de France are all within walking distance. The hotel's variety of activities -- volleyball, ping-pong, petanque, and tennis -- also entice guests stay on-site.

Most guests choose to spend their time at one of the two pools or the beach. The pool adjacent to the lobby with its dark wood deck, ocean views, and loud music from the DJ booth is ideal for sunbathing. A second, larger pool is secluded in the center of the property, surrounded by palm trees. Ideal for families, it features a waterfall and a separate shallow area for kids. The beach offers plenty of lounge chairs and white sand, but the water can be rough for swimming. Rock walls surround the swimming area with a narrow area designated for entering the water.

At the top of the property, up a steep set of wood stairs from the main pool, is the hotel's trio of bar, restaurant, and banquet area. The enormous space offers an airy perch that's perfect for sipping cocktails and watching the sun set over the bay. Beneath the dining room's vaulted roof, there are plenty of places to sit and lounge all within view of the gardens and ocean. The banquet room with its stage and rows of tables is the spot for guests to gather for evening entertainment that includes steel bands, orchestras, and dance troupes.

At the end of a paved road, Rue de Flamboyants, which leads to the peninsula in Point du Bout, about a 40-minite drive to Martinique's international airport

The Hotel Carayou has one of the most desirable locations in Les Trois Ilets. Set on a peninsula in Point du Bout, close to the shops and cafes of the Villiage Creaole, the hotel is surrounded on two sides by the ocean and bathed in constant breezes.

  • Five-minute walk to Village Creole
  • Seven-minute drive to Martinique Golf and Country Club
  • 10-minute walk to Anse Mitan Beach
  • 30-minute drive to Diamant Beach
  • 40-minute drive to Martinique Aimé Césaire International Airport
  • One-hour drive to the Balata Garden
  • 70-minute drive to the Caravelle Peninsula
  • One-hour, 35-minute drive to Paul Gauguin Museum
  • Two-hour drive to Mt. Pelée

Basic rooms with colorful French Creole style equipped with twin or full-size beds, sleeper sofas, and terraces with views of the gardens or sea

The Carayou Hotel and Spa's 132 rooms follow the hotel's cheery French Creole style with bright blue fretwork trim along the ceilings, painted shutters above the beds that slide open, and beach-inspired artwork. The furnishings are basic laminate style, with small desks, bureaus, and wooden side chairs. The beds are framed with reading lamps and finished with either brown or bright blue bedding that matches the window treatments. Standard Rooms have either two twin beds or one double bed, and some have sofa beds; they fit up to three. There are communicating rooms available for larger families.

The rooms are about 270 square feet and all feature small terraces with plastic white chairs, tables, and views of either the gardens or sea. Amenities include safes, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs, but there are no mini-fridges and kitchenettes, unlike at many other Martinique hotels of this caliber.

The bathrooms feature single vanities with laminate countertops, white tile work, walk-in showers, and separate water closets enclosed by blue swinging doors. Soap and shampoo are provided along with plenty of white towels.

Two pools, a spa, a white-sand beach, a large water sports center, and a huge restaurant with a bar and banquet facility

The Carayou Hotel and Spa offers a slew of amenities that appeal to active families and guests. The hotel's location makes it ideal for sailing, windsurfing, and kiteboarding, and guests can sign up for lessons or equipment rentals at at the water sports center adjacent to the beach. Snorkeling equipment and kayaks are available for guests to use while catamaran excursions and diving lessons and trips can be arranged. On land, the hotel offers a lit tennis court, volleyball, basketball, and a designated area close to the lobby for games such as ping-pong, billiards, and foosball.

For more relaxation-mined guests, Le Spa Josephine is set in a quiet location at that center of the property surrounded by gardens and palm trees. Offering a range of treatments, the spa has four treatment rooms, a steam room, sauna, whirlpool, and a private outdoor relaxation space equipped with plush lounge chairs set on a wooden deck that appears to float above the water.

The huge restaurant has views of the sea and serves Creole cuisine for all three meals. Free Wi-Fi is available in the restaurant, bar, by the pool, and in the rooms. There are five function rooms for meetings and events.
