Bottom Line

The Carayou Hotel and Spa is sprawling, 207-room mid-range resort with two pools, a small man-made beach, a spa, and numerous water sports. Its peninsula location delivers double-sided ocean views and constant ocean breezes, ideal for kiteboarding and windsurfing. The rooms are basic but colorful, styled with French Creole accents and beach-inspired artwork and offering views of the gardens or sea from small terraces. The hotel's grounds and public spaces are vast but could use some attention, especially around the lobby. Those seeking a more intimate and stylish stay might enjoy the hillside Le Suite Villa or the more upscale beachfront Hotel Bakoua.

Carayou Hotel & Spa

Scene

A large resort with two pools, a beach, and multiple activities, including a well-stocked water sports center

Set on a peninsula in Point du Bout, Martinique's main tourist area, the Carayou Hotel and Spa benefits from its prime location. A constant breeze keeps guests cool and refreshed with the smell of the sea while windsurfers and kiteboarders can practice their skills right from the shores of the hotel, which has one of the best locations for constant wind on the island. For those not participating, the lively kites and sails bumping against the waves and the turquoise sea are interesting to watch.

The hotel is attractive mostly to budget-conscious families and couples who come for the beach, the pools, and the all-inclusive rates, which can be booked for breakfast only or to cover all meals and drinks. While the hotel offers plenty of free parking, having a car is not necessary as the shops and cafes of the Village Creole, the gentle waves of Anse Mitan Beach, and the ferry that shuttles to Fort de France are all within walking distance. The hotel's variety of activities -- volleyball, ping-pong, petanque, and tennis -- also entice guests stay on-site.

Most guests choose to spend their time at one of the two pools or the beach. The pool adjacent to the lobby with its dark wood deck, ocean views, and loud music from the DJ booth is ideal for sunbathing. A second, larger pool is secluded in the center of the property, surrounded by palm trees. Ideal for families, it features a waterfall and a separate shallow area for kids. The beach offers plenty of lounge chairs and white sand, but the water can be rough for swimming. Rock walls surround the swimming area with a narrow area designated for entering the water.

At the top of the property, up a steep set of wood stairs from the main pool, is the hotel's trio of bar, restaurant, and banquet area. The enormous space offers an airy perch that's perfect for sipping cocktails and watching the sun set over the bay. Beneath the dining room's vaulted roof, there are plenty of places to sit and lounge all within view of the gardens and ocean. The banquet room with its stage and rows of tables is the spot for guests to gather for evening entertainment that includes steel bands, orchestras, and dance troupes.
