Bottom Line

The Pierre and Vacances Village Club is a sprawling 337-room, mid-range condominium resort that caters to families and active guests with amenities that range from water aerobics classes to Jet Skiing to scheduled entertainment at an outdoor amphitheater. The huge lagoon-style pool is the main attraction, offering plenty of lounge chairs, a hot tub, and a kids' pool. Three restaurants, a private stretch of white-sand beach, and clubs for kids and teens keep guests on-site. There's also a well-stocked market, a plus for self-catering guests who prefer to cook their own meals in the kitchenettes on the terraces of their rooms. While there's plenty to do, the hotel's generic French-Creole style lacks authenticity, and rooms are on the small side and could use some updating. Those seeking a more intimate and stylish property might consider the Hotel Plein Soleil.

Pierre & Vacances Holiday Village Sainte Luce

Scene

A vast condominium resort with a huge lagoon-style pool, access to a quiet beach, and a dizzying array of activities

In cheerleader fashion, enthusiastic staff members circle the pool, dancing to peppy Latin music, working to cajole guests out of their lounge chairs and into the water for afternoon aerobics classes. Many follow suit, laughing and tossing their hands in the air, succumbing to the spirit that encompasses the resort. At the village-style Pierre and Vacances, it is easy to fall into the rhythm of daily activity.

The sprawling property begins at the lobby, where dark-wood, colonial-Caribbean style furniture sets the tone. A bar and lounge area adjacent to the front desk spills onto an outdoor terrace that overlooks the pool. Throughout the space, there's a pool table and other games, but they are just distractions. The hotel's main attraction, an enormous lagoon-style swimming pool, is a few steps out the gate. At one end there's a round shallow kids' pool, in the middle a swim-up bar (although no drinks are served), and at the other end is a quiet space with a massage hut. Settling in to one of the cobalt-blue loungers shaded by yellow umbrellas is a popular activity, despite the hotel's efforts to keep guests active.

Follow the winding paths from the pool across the rolling lawns to reach a playground surrounded by flamboyant trees, clubs for kids and teens, tennis courts, beach volleyball, an open-air amphitheater, and a diving center. Close to the beach there's a rustic beachside restaurant, a water-sports center, and a long crescent of white sand bordered by trees. The beach is ideal for picnicking and relaxing away from the buzz of the pool, and the calm water is attractive to families with small children and guests wanting to float, snorkel, and swim.

While Pierre and Vacances is a quick drive to a handful of local restaurants, the hotel offers three dining options on-site, as well as a small market stocked with everything needed to prepare simple meals in the the guest room kitchenettes. The property lacks a gym, but there's a fitness route that begins at the hotel and follows the beach for 1.2 kilometers (about three-quarters of a mile) toward the entry to the village of Saint-Luce.

Rooms

Rooms and apartments can be combined to form larger units, all with terraces and kitchenettes, many with pool and sea views

The Hotel Pierre and Vacances Village Club's 337 rooms were designed to be connected to form large apartments to accommodate families and groups. The rooms are located in a variety of three-story buildings scattered across the vast property, reached by stone pathways and connected to courtyards with fountains and ping-pong tables. The buildings were built to resemble a Creole village with steep roof lines, red-tile roofs, and white fretwork trim.

Standard Studios are small, furnished with two low-slung twin beds pushed together against a large headboard and fitted with basic sheets and pillows, quilted white blankets, and unattractive orange bed skirts and throw pillows that coordinate with chairs and floral window treatments. The dark-wood colonial-Caribbean style furnishings include desks, armoires, and small bedside tables, but they show signs of wear and tear. Sunny yellow walls, generic Caribbean artwork, wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, and terra-cotta tile floors complete the space. Bathrooms feature long, single vanities with plenty of counter space, stall showers, and water closets tucked behind swinging, saloon-style doors painted aquamarine. In addition to the Standard Studios, the hotel offers two-bedroom Apartments with bedrooms connected to central living areas with sofas, round dining tables, and private balconies with kitchenettes.

Perhaps the biggest asset of the rooms are the spacious terraces outfitted with kitchenettes -- stovetops, refrigerators, microwaves, coffeemakers, sinks, and all the necessary plates, cookware, and flatware needed to prepare full meals. Dining tables, cleaning supplies, and folding clotheslines are also included. Accordion-style doors separate the terraces between studio rooms, and can be opened to form large spaces when the rooms are connected.

Set in the village, it offers pizzas, sandwiches, snacks and drinks.
