Located next to its own marina in the historic town of St. Michaels, this cozy hotel offers comfortable, if dated, rooms and suites, and a prime waterfront address near shops and restaurants. Highlights include a well-reviewed spa, waterfront restaurant, and a modest outdoor pool with bar service. Scene

An inn with harborside charm, a private marina, a spa, and a restaurant

Locally owned and operated, this three-story hotel opened in 1986 with 47 rooms (including 32 suites). The town of St. Michaels was named after an Episcopal Parish established here in 1677, and the hotel and small town retain a nautical and historic ambiance. The hotel decor feels something like a nautical hunting lodge, with paintings of beach scenes jumbled together with statues of game birds (as well as stuffed and mounted ones). The lobby is old-fashioned with nautical clocks and a taxidermic deer.Extras (covered by a resort fee) include parking, continental breakfast (served in an upstairs dining room), bicycle rentals, and shuttle service to nearby downtown. A gift shop next to the lobby sells snacks and souvenirs, and three cardio machines are available in a tiny fitness center upstairs. A restaurant and bar has indoor/outdoor seating and, in season, doubles as a pool bar (a window opens into the pool area for food and drink service). The outdoor pool is clean, albeit somewhat small, and offers pleasant views of the hotel’s 52-slip marina. A well-reviewed spa with a small steam room attracts couples to the hotel (couples’ massages and in-room treatments are available). “Yachties” and families also frequent the property.

Location

On the Chesapeake Bay waterfront near historic downtown St. Michaels

The St. Michael’s Inn is located directly off the Miles River on the harbor in historic St. Michaels (a small town of 1.25 square miles). The hotel sits beside its own marina, and guests can walk, bike, or take a water taxi or free shuttle to the heart of downtown, which has a handful of restaurants and shops. The Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum -- a four-minute drive away -- is a good place to learn about the town’s history.- 10-minute walk to downtown

  • Four-minute drive from the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum
  • 45-minute drive from the Bay Bridge
  • 80-minute drive from BWI International Airport

Rooms

Spacious rooms with comfy beds and waterfront views

The hotel’s 47 rooms and suites are spacious and feature traditional (though somewhat dated) decor -- wooden furniture, beige walls, blue carpets -- and maintain the nautical hunting theme present throughout the property. Each comes with two queen beds or one king or queen bed. All units include coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, and iPod stereos. All but four rooms have direct waterfront views, and select rooms offer patios and private balconies (higher floors have better views). All suites have kitchenettes with sinks and mini-fridges, and select suites offer wet bars, whirlpool tubs, bathrobes, and a separate bath and shower. Select rooms have sofa beds and all rooms are pet-friendly (for a fee).

Features

A cozy spa, free breakfasts, outdoor pool, bicycles, and a tiny fitness center

Features at St. Michael’s Inn include a cozy spa with skilled technicians, a waterfront restaurant and lounge bar, lobby computer station, modest outdoor pool (with bathrooms, showers, and bar service), and a tiny fitness center on the third floor (free passes to the YMCA are also provided, but it’s a quarter-mile away). Freebies (not technically free, as there is a resort fee) include continental breakfast, shuttle service within town, parking, Wi-Fi, daily newspaper delivery, and bicycle rentals. A full-service marina has a Ship Store (open 24-hours), laundry facilities, and water taxi service from the Dock (small fee). Room service is available during the day only.
