Bottom Line

Though it has its own name, the Kaanapali Ocean Inn is considered the budget-friendly section of the Royal Lahaina Resort. The two hotels function as a single property, sharing outdoor pools, restaurants, sports facilities, and access to the lovely Kaanapali Beach. The 59 rooms here have cheerful, albeit old-fashioned, decor, as well as flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and tea- and coffee-making facilities; some add ocean-view balconies. However, many are showing wear and tear. Guests here will have to go next door for anything aside from the beach, but it's a decent pick for budget travelers. It's worth considering nearby Kaanapali Beach Hotel, which has slightly higher rates but all amenities in one place.

Kaanapali Ocean Inn

Scene

Budget-friendly section of larger beachfront resort

Kaanapali Ocean Inn is the budget-friendly section of the larger Royal Lahaina Resort complex next door. Guests check in at the Royal Lahaina lobby, and have access to that property's extensive amenities throughout their stay. While this means guests at the Kaanapali Ocean Inn get resort amenities for a budget price, they'll have to walk next door for anything, and many have complained of noise from the Royal Lahaina's luaus that take place six nights a week. This is an older building, with the typical traditional Hawaiian decor found throughout the island, such as white wicker furniture, tropical-motif bed runners and chair cushions, and sea-themed artwork, which some past guests find dated. Wear and tear is also evident. Potential visitors should note that there's no elevator here, and all rooms are located on the second and third floors.

Location

Directly on Kaanapali Beach, about a 45-minute drive from the airport

The Kaanapali Ocean Inn has an excellent location on the lovely Kaanapali Beach, one of Maui’s most-visited beaches. The hotel offers direct access to the sand via a walkway from the north side of the property. There are a handful of restaurants in the immediate surrounds, and more can be found alongside shops at Whalers Village, a 17-minute walk away. The property is about a 10-minute drive from downtown Lahaina, Maui’s largest city, where there are lots of shopping and dining outlets. Kahului Airport is about a 45-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Old-fashioned rooms with quality amenities, but some wear

Air-conditioned rooms at the Kaanapali Ocean Inn are cheerful, albeit old-fashioned, spaces with beachy decor. The traditional Hawaiian design consists of white wicker seating and wooden furniture,  tropical-motif bed runners and chair cushions, popcorn ceilings, and tan carpet. Soft-blue accent walls and sea-themed artwork, plus blue-painted dressers in some, add pleasant touches. Unfortunately, some wear and tear is evident, and guests have reports musty smells. Straightforward bathrooms have dated tile work, mirrored closet doors, and small showers (no tubs in any room). Hairdryers and basic toiletries are provided. In-room amenities are good, consisting of tables with chairs, electronic safes, mini-fridges, ironing facilities, flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, and iHome docking stations. Only Ocean Front Rooms have balconies, which are equipped with a set of rocking chairs.

Many guests have complained of noise from thin walls and the next-door luaus that occur six nights per week. Travelers with mobility issues or strollers should be aware that there are no elevators and all rooms are located on the second and third floors.

Features

No on-site features aside from direct beach access, but many next door

The Kaanapali Ocean Inn doesn’t have any real features, aside from direct access to the beautiful and public Kaanapali Beach (there aren’t any lounge chairs or umbrellas set up along the sand). Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, while parking requires a fee and many guests have reported having trouble finding a vacant spot. On the upside, guests can use all of the amenities at the Royal Lahaina Resort next door. This includes three swimming pools, several tennis courts and sports facilities, two bars, entertainment such as luaus (fee), and an oceanfront restaurant.
