Bottom Line

This 152-unit upper-middle-range condo resort’s best feature is its prime location along lovely Ulua Beach, a family-friendly beach that offers some of the best snorkeling in Maui. However as buildings are spread across a 24-acre property, some units are far from the oceanfront. The contemporary condos are generally modern, though some units are still due for a refresh. Two nice pools and a hot tub round out the amenities at this low-key property that is serious about its quiet hours. Units are nicer than those at the larger Wailea Ekahi Village.

Wailea Elua Village

Scene

A large beachfront condo resort that's just a peg above mid-range

In the posh town of Wailea, this gated beachfront property is relaxed and low-key. Its 152 condos are nicer than the units at the neighboring Ekahi Village – including more upgrades and square footage – but not as large or updated as the condos at Makena Surf, another option a little farther down the road. One-, two-, or three-bedroom units will fit the needs of a variety of guests, which include many families. However certain established rules, like quiet hours by the pool, curfews, and no playing allowed on the lawns, definitely cater to older guests. Though down near the beach, there is a friendly, sociable atmosphere and many guests can be found making new friends by the pool. The property faces onto the lovely Ulua beach, a popular spot with some of the best snorkeling on the island.

This large property from Destination Resorts Hawaii, a management company that maintains several condo resorts in the area, is a solid choice, with two nice pools and renovated facilities, but not many bells and whistles. It’s a great option for those looking for a beachfront property in Wailea with modern units that aren't at an expensive resort. But guests should be aware that due to the large size of the property – 24 acres – only the buildings toward the front have views of the beach. The condos toward the back are about a 10-minute walk from the sand.

Location

Prime location on the lovely Ulua beach, amid the big resorts of Wailea

The Wailea Elua Village is an oceanfront property in the middle of the upscale Wailea area of South Maui. It enjoys a prime location that faces onto the lovely Ulua Beach, a spot known for excellent snorkeling. This part of the island is populated with golf courses and several big resorts, and the Elua property is situated between the Andaz and the Marriott. There are a handful of restaurants within walking distance of the resort, including options at the Shops at Wailea, a swanky shopping mall less than a 10-minute walk away. Many more dining and shopping spots are located within a short drive of the property. It’s about a 30-minute drive to the Kahului airport.

Rooms

Condos with private lanais are generally modern, but some more so than others

The 152 units at Elua Village consist of one-, two-, or three-bedroom condos. Each condo features a large, open-plan living room, dining room, and kitchen area with high ceilings. The kitchens are fully equipped, including dishwashers, and most are upgraded with marble countertops and stainless steel appliances. Living rooms have big windows that let in plenty of light and large sliding glass doors that open to the lanai, creating a nice indoor-outdoor space.

Each unit is individually owned, and the decor varies in each condo due to the owner’s tastes. Some have older, slightly dated pieces, like 90s-style gold trimmed dressers and heavy stone slab tabletops. Others have very nice contemporary furniture choices, and include extras like iPod docks and surround-sound speakers. All condos include flat-screen TVs and DVD players. In many units, the bathrooms have updated tile, fixtures, and marble countertops. Some showers also feature either double showerheads or a rainfall showerhead. Bedrooms have walk-in closets. Every unit includes a good-size lanai with an outdoor dining area and a barbecue grill – and most condos have great ocean views, though the buildings toward the back of the property are a far walk from the beach.

Features

Two pools, a hot tub, and an excellent beach with great snorkeling

The highlight of this property is its beachfront location. Ulua Beach is an excellent one, wide and long, with lots of space to spread out and great for families and kids. A nice one-and-a-half mile walking trail called the Wailea Beach Walk runs by the property. There’s a large, vibrant coral head at one end of the beach where snorkelers and scuba divers can see scores of colorful fish, and often sea turtles too. Due to the great snorkeling, Ulua is a popular spot and can be crowded at peak times.

There is a large green lawn that puts lots of space between the condos and the beachfront, so guests have privacy. There are two swimming pools. The one located in the middle of the property, set back a bit from the beach, also has a nice hot tub. Next to this pool are a paddle tennis court and small golf putting green. Located down on the beachfront, the main pool is situated alongside a nice clubhouse area called The Pavilion. With direct views of the beach, the large pavilion includes many tables for lunch, a few barbecue grills, and kitchen facilities. There is even a small business center with a computer inside for guests to use. Surrounding the large pool, dozens of padded lounge chairs are provided shade by a grove of palm trees, as well as a few umbrellas. A small fitness room with a selection of modern machines overlooks the main pool. There’s no spa or restaurant on site. Free W-iFi and parking is provided.
