There aren’t many three-pearl lodging options in ritzy Wailea, but Wailea Grand Champions Villas offers solid value with its 107 one-, two-, and three-bedroom condo units. The quiet property is located in the middle of the Wailea Blue Golf Course and within walking distance of local shops and restaurants, though it's a hilly 20-minute walk from the beach. There are two outdoor pools with adjacent grilling areas, but no other amenities like a fitness center, restaurant, spa, or daily housekeeping. Travelers looking for apartment-style units with resort amenities might prefer Honua Kai Resort & Spa, though it’s pricier and located on the opposite end of Maui on North Kaanapali Beach.
Scene
A quiet condo complex that attracts families and large groups
Wailea Grand Champions Villas feels more like an apartment complex than a hotel. Guests check in at an off-site reception office and are given a code to access their villa. The complex is composed of two-story buildings surrounded by parking lots, and many people live in their units full-time. There’s no wow factor here, but for families and large groups, Wailea Grand Champions offers great value, especially in this pricey resort town. The complex isn’t modern or luxurious, but in Wailea, where most condo complexes scream 1980, Wailea Grand Champions feels refreshingly of this century.
Location
In ritzy Wailea, a 20-minute walk from the beach
Like its name implies, Wailea Grand Champions is located in Wailea, in the middle of the Wailea Blue Golf Course. It's removed from the beach (about 20 minutes on foot), but there is lots of great shopping and dining in the area. The Shops at Wailea and Island Gourmet Markets are within a 10-minute walk, and most of the area’s hotels are reachable on foot. Wailea Grand Champions is a 30-minute drive from Maui’s Kahului Airport. Wailea is one of Maui’s premier resort areas, home to exclusive names like the Four Seasons, the Fairmont, and the Grand Wailea. Along with expensive hotels, Wailea is known for its year-round sunshine, excellent golf courses, and beautiful beaches. Wailea Beach is south Maui’s most famous stretch of sand, but nearby Makena Beach is also worth visiting. Like all beaches in Hawaii, both Wailea and Makena are open to the public.
Rooms
Decor varies across individually owned apartment-style units
Wailea Grand Champions is composed of large one-, two-, and three-bedroom condo units. Each condo is individually owned, so decor varies throughout. While you won’t find anything strikingly modern or luxurious, Wailea Grand Champions is one of the newer condo complexes in the area, so nothing seems too dated. Both of the units we visited -- a one-bedroom and a three-bedroom -- had upscale finishes like elegant wood furniture, marble countertops, stainless-steel appliances, and slate tile bathrooms. Kitchens are equipped with full-size appliances (including dishwashers), cutlery, flatware, and pots and pans. The condos’ interior living areas with flat-screen TVs feel spacious, but their outdoor balconies feel small and compact -- largely because outdoor washer/dryer units take up a lot of space. Most of the villas have views of the golf course and/or distant views of the ocean. Well-kept bathrooms have showers or shower/tub combos and toiletries.
Features
Two pools, free parking, and Wi-Fi
Wailea Grand Champions doesn’t have many amenities. There are two pools, and freebies like parking and Wi-Fi, but don’t expect hotel-style features like a fitness center, spa, restaurant, or even daily housekeeping. The two outdoor pools are centrally located on opposite sides of the complex. Both areas are well-maintained, and surrounded by tropical foliage and palm trees. Blue mosaic tiles give the pool water a shimmery quality, while green tiled sea turtles add some whimsy. Padded lounge chairs and umbrellas provide plenty of seating and there are table and chair sets located next to both grilling areas. The stainless-steel grills are cleaned regularly, so guests don’t have to worry about cooking their meals on grime-y surfaces. The free Wi-Fi works well across the property, and guests can park for free in their villa’s designated space(s).
