Bottom Line

A well-worn strip mall-style exterior belies the surprisingly modern, three-pearl Pereybere Hotel & Spa. It packs a substantial list of amenities: a rooftop pool, a casual alfresco restaurant/bar, and a breezy spa into a tiny footprint. All 32 rooms (redesigned in 2017) are bright, chic, and well-appointed with flat-screen TVs, kitchenettes, and upscale bathrooms. Although it’s not situated on the beach (like many area hotels), the sheer number of amenities is likely to draw plenty of budget travelers. Hibiscus Beach Resort & Spa across the street lacks the same charm but offers similar amenities and a beachfront location for just a bit more money.

Pereybere Hotel & Spa

Scene

A small, modern boutique hotel with a surprisingly chic vibe

The hotel shares space with a handful of retail shops which together give the building little curb appeal. Indeed, it's easy to imagine new guests believing they've arrived at the wrong address. But, the unusual exterior belies a modern interior (redesigned in May 2017) clad in a tasteful blend of wood, glass, and metal. A central open-air atrium, stone fountains, and a glass elevator all add touches of charm. The rooftop pool, alfresco restaurant, and lively bar are all small but ample enough to keep the social scene humming day and night, particularly for the limited number of guests. Guests tend to be younger European and American couples seeking an affordable, centrally located hotel with hints of modernity.

Location

On the tourist strip in Pereybere, one hour from Mauritius’ international airport

The hotel’s prime location along beachfront B13 places guests in the heart of Pereybere’s tourist district. A 10-minute walk in any direction leads to dozens of restaurants, bars, and shops. Pereybere public beach, one of the island’s most beautiful, is directly across the street, while several other stunning public beaches are reachable in 10 minutes by car. Guests can stock their in-room kitchenettes at the large, modern Winner’s Supermarket just a three-minute walk north on foot. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) is on the opposite side of the island, one hour away by car. The hotel can facilitate paid airport transportation. However, taxis and shuttles are easy to hail in the surrounding area with reasonable rates.

Rooms

Sleek, modern rooms with kitchenettes, flat-screen TVs, and upscale bathrooms

Room decor is far more modern than most would expect of a mid-range hotel in the area. Quartz countertops, faux leather seating, and sliding frosted glass doors all add up to a healthy dose of sophistication. The four room categories differ mainly in size and layout. Entry-level Deluxe Superior Rooms offer typical, studio-style layouts, while Suites upgrade to at least 700 square feet (65 square meters) of floor space and multi-room layouts. Kitchenettes with refrigerators and microwaves, flat-screen TVs, and plenty of USB charging outlets are all standard. We found the free Wi-Fi to be fast and reliable during our visit. Bathrooms are bright and modern with wide vanities and all-glass shower stalls; some Suites add large soaking tubs. Hairdryers and pump-style bath amenities are provided. Balconies are not available in any category.

A rooftop pool deck and spa, plus a relaxed restaurant/bar with alfresco dining

Features are surprisingly ample. The tiered rooftop pool space seamlessly combines a beautiful infinity pool, an intimate terrace with seating for a dozen guests, a breezy spa, and a small fitness room. The pool is modestly sized, but lounge chairs and umbrellas provide a nice outdoor space for a handful of guests to relax. In a small room just off the pool is an open-air spa. While massage sessions are limited to one guest or couple at a time, the space does feature a sauna and two small hot tubs (each large enough for two guests) with city views.

The first-floor restaurant is a casual eatery with alfresco dining and a lively indoor bar with additional seating. The space is popular with both locals and guests. The all-day menu consists of traditional Western-friendly favorites, plus authentic, seafood-centric Mauritius dishes. Room service is available for a fee.

A small game area in the lobby houses a pool table, a foosball table, and simple play area for kids. Fast, free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel, including at the rooftop deck. Self-parking is free in a small lot around the corner. For security, 24-hour video surveillance is provided throughout the property.
