Bottom Line

This two-pearl hotel is a solid choice for those on a budget. It's located just off Paseo de la Reforma, the city's main avenue, which is filled with monuments, shops, and restaurants. It's certainly past its prime, style-wise, but the property is well-maintained, attracting short-stay tourists and business travelers. The 45 rooms are basic, but clean, with flat-screen TVs, safes, and free Wi-Fi, but they lack air-conditioning and some pick up street noise. There's a cafe on the ground floor, serving Mexican cuisine in a casual setting, including an affordable cooked-to-order breakfast. For something with a few more extras, travelers should also consider rates at the Hotel Plaza Revolucion, where rooms are air-conditioned and more modern -- it's just a bit more expensive.

New York Hotel

Scene

Simple budget hotel with dated style, geared toward short-stay travelers who will be out exploring

The New York Hotel has an old-fashioned look and feel, with decor that wouldn't look out of place in the 1980s (or earlier). Despite its retro appearance, the property is clean and well-maintained, making it ideal for unfussy short-stay travelers who will be out exploring the city. The lobby is small and plain, with marble-finish floors, dark green doors and window frames, and a seating area with a soft red couch and light wood table and chairs. Colorful contemporary artwork hangs on the walls to brighten up the space. The cafe on the ground floor is the only real communal area, with metal frame chairs, yellow tabletops, and a casual atmosphere. Guests tend to pass through the hotel during the day rather than hang around, and most are tourists and business travelers.

Location

A five-minute walk from Paseo de la Reforma, and 15 minutes from Palacio de Bellas Artes on foot

The hotel is located on Calle Tomas Alva Edison, a street just off Paseo de la Reforma, Mexico City's main avenue. The street is considered safe for tourists, and is busy during the day but quiet at night. The impressive Monument to the Revolution is a three-minute walk away, and there are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby, plus a market with street food stalls that's open from morning until night. Paseo de la Reforma is awash with monuments and museums, so it's a go-to for anyone exploring the city. The historic center sights like the Zocalo, Palacio Nacional, Templo Mayor, and the Palacio de Bellas Artes are all within a 15- to 20-minute walk. Alternatively, the Hidalgo Metro station is an eight-minute walk from the hotel, for direct access to the historic center and other parts of the city. Mexico City International Airport is around a 35-minute drive away, though traffic means you should budget at least an hour during rush hours.

Rooms

Basic, clean rooms with free Wi-Fi, but decor is old-fashioned and there's no air-conditioning

Like the rest of the hotel, all 45 guest rooms are simply decorated with old-fashioned decor. They're clean and spacious, with blue and white color schemes, wooden furnishings, and old-fashioned floral-print bedding and curtains. Downsides are the lack of air-conditioning, which can make the rooms feel stuffy, and limited power sockets. Flat-screen TVs, safes, phones, and free Wi-Fi come standard. Some guests have had trouble with the Wi-Fi in higher-floor rooms. Guests can choose from Single, Twin, or Double Rooms, with courtyard or street-facing views. Although the hotel is quiet by Mexico City standards, street-facing rooms can be noisier. Tiled bathrooms are basic and slightly cramped, with showers and soap, but no hairdryers or other toiletries.

Features

Limited amenities include a Mexican restaurant, parking for a fee, and free Wi-Fi

The New York Hotel offers guests basic necessities and facilities. There's a small cafeteria on the ground floor, with a relaxed atmosphere and casual setting. Its serves affordable homemade Mexican dishes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus hot and cold beverages. A cooked-to-order breakfast is available for guests, but there are plenty of cheap street-food stalls nearby that are open in the mornings. Room service is available, but hours are limited. Other services include a 24-hour front desk, currency exchange, safety deposit box, laundry, dry cleaning, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel has a garage with ample parking space, but this costs extra.
