Bottom Line

The St. Regis is one of the best luxury hotels in Mexico City. Its location on bustling Avenida Reforma means immediate access to the entire city, but the hotel packs resort-style amenities into a skyscraper for guests who don't want to explore. Features include Remede Spa with an indoor swimming pool, a modern fitness center, and eight restaurant outlets. Each of the 189 spacious guest rooms and suites comes with 24-hour butler service for free assistance with unpacking, laundry services, and morning coffee delivery. The downfall? Extra fees for breakfast, parking, and Wi-Fi in the guest rooms. The Four Seasons down the street has nicer business services, but the rooms aren't as modern.

The St. Regis Mexico City

Scene

A contemporary oasis

The St. Regis Mexico City was designed by renowned architect Cesar Pelli, to serve as a luxurious and contemporary escape from the hustle and bustle of Mexico City. The hotel is located inside a skyscraper, so it provides epic views of Mexico City and its famous monument, Diana Cazadora, from floor-to-ceiling windows. Seating areas look like designer living rooms, set with powder blue velvet sectional sofas, glass tables with geometric bases, elaborate fresh flower displays, and blue floral-patterned carpets. Even the hotel's scent, Carolina 400, has been specially designed to create a clear sense of place. Though the bellmen and butlers wear tails and top hats, the formal vibe is still approachable and friendly. Many of the guests are business travelers, and couples come for Remede Spa and romantic dining at Diana Restaurant. The King Cole Bar replicates the famous mural found at the St. Regis in New York City

Location

On Paseo de la Reforma

Paseo de la Reforma is one of the main arteries in Mexico City, and it was designed to replicate the wide boulevards of Europe. The St. Regis sits directly in front of the world famous fountain and monument, Diana Cazadora, which pays homage to the Greek goddess Diana the Huntress. The Japanese and American embassies are down the street, as are endless restaurants, public plazas, art galleries, chain stores, designer boutiques, handicraft shops, and public transportation options. Chapultepec, a tourist location with ancient forests, a zoo, and amusement park, is about a 15-minute walk away. Parking costs extra at the hotel and there's a helicopter landing pad on the roof for those arriving via chopper -- the St. Regis is that kind of place.

Rooms

Sophisticated and spacious -- each comes with free butler service

After arriving to one of the hotel's 189 guest rooms and suites, the floor's dedicated butler, dressed in tails, will personally greet you and offer assistance with unpacking, ironing, and concierge services. Butlers are also available via e-mail or telephone 24 hours a day. It's a nice touch that sets the St. Regis apart from its luxury competitors. The rooms themselves are spacious and have enormous windows that overlook Reforma Avenue. Decor is contemporary and modern. The most affordable Grand Deluxe Rooms are done in the hotel's signature and tasteful purple and cream color palette. Luxurious attention to detail includes plush carpeting, a beige sectional sofa, gray armchair, and framed abstract art. For technology, expect a flat-screen TV with movie channels, electronic panel to control the drapes and lights, multiline telephones, an electronic safe large enough to hold a laptop, and to pay for in-room Wi-Fi.

Spa-like bathrooms are done with high quality finishes and include a separate water closet for privacy. Double sinks, an enormous rainfall showerhead, and soaking bathtub complete the aesthetic. Look carefully -- there's a small TV embedded in the bathroom mirror. Remede toiletries and hairdryers are provided.

Fifteen Luxury Suites provide more space and amenities, along with the same sophisticated furniture and design found in the Grand Deluxe Rooms. Expect a wet bar, bedroom, and a separate dining area with seating for six. Onyx and marble bathrooms are the same as what's offered in the deluxe rooms, but the suites have an additional powder room. For a kitchen, you'll have to book the over-the-top St. Regis Suite, but it may already be booked by visiting dignitaries.

Features

Remede Spa, indoor swimming pool, and a fitness center

The St. Regis Mexico City manages to house resort-style amenities in a skyscraper. Guests with treatments booked at Remede Spa are greeted on the 15th floor with Champagne and truffles. Seven treatment rooms, full locker rooms, and a relaxation room that overlooks the city, are carefully designed with peace and wellness in mind. Treatments include oxygen-infused facials and hot stone massages. Salon and nail services are also available. There's a small indoor swimming pool, steam room, and sauna.

All guests have access to the modern fitness center. Large windows overlook the city and let in ample light. Technogym equipment is state-of-the-art and there's a full range of strength-training equipment and pilates machines. Guests can also use two outdoor grass courts located at the Sheraton Mexico City Maria Isabel Hotel, located one-and-a-half kilometers away.

Wi-Fi is free in the public areas and Internet access is available in the small, but sophisticated, business center -- which offers desktop computers, a fax machine, scanner, and printing facilities for additional fees. Meeting rooms and event spaces are available. Concierge and secretarial staff can assist with event planning.

Kids are catered to with a cute kids' club. Older kids will like Wii and movies while little ones can make use of the easels and indoor playground equipment. Babysitting services are provided for an additional cost. Cribs and rollaway beds can be set up in the rooms for free.

With eight different bar and restaurant outlets inside the hotel, plus 24-hour room service, food and drink options are super convenient. Note that breakfast isn't included in the room price.

J&G Grill is a smart and casual dining option for lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch. Executive Chef Olivier Desboise Mendez serves steaks and seafoods along with an excellent wine selection.

Candelo Romero is a Spanish bistro that serves contemporary cuisine on a small terrace overlooking Paseo de la Reforma.

King Cole Bar serves snacks, wines, and a full list of cocktails -- including its specialty Sangrita Maria. There's an iconic mural on the wall that replicates the original found at the St. Regis New York. Guests can sit on an enclosed terrace that overlooks Mexico City.

The ambience is sophisticated with dark woods and leather chairs, but still laidback enough for (well-behaved) kids.

La Table Krug is a fine-dining French restaurant that only sits 12 people. It's mostly for private events and business deals.

The Atrium provides a daily afternoon tea and free Champagne reception for guests once a week. The Glass House Cafe is the spot for grabbing coffee and pastries throughout the day. Juice Bar serves freshly squeezed juices and healthy snacks near the spa and fitness center.
