Bottom Line

Opened in 2015, this attractive three-pearl property is quite a hike from the bright lights of downtown Miami, but it does put guests close to Doral’s business parks, shopping malls, and golf courses; moreover, being part of Starwood’s environmentally-friendly Element family, it lets them go green in style. After all, the 139 units come with designer kitchenettes, spa-inspired bathrooms, plus in-room amenities like flat-screen TVs, charging stations and connectivity panels. On-site features such as a saline pool and well-equipped fitness center are further incentives to stay; ditto for the freebies, which include Wi-Fi, a healthy breakfast buffet and a warm welcome for pets. Travelers looking for a livelier (and nosier) mid-range alternative in the area can try the hip Aloft Miami Doral, an adjacent sister property.

Element Miami Doral

Scene

Modern, minimalist spaces with special appeal for eco-conscious travelers

With its boxy white exterior, the seven-story Element Miami Doral fits well with its surroundings… which isn’t saying much considering those surroundings include office parks. Inside, however, its appeal is more apparent. For example, the airy, minimalist-look lobby -- done up in shades of cream and cocoa with earthy green accents -- is more stylish than you’d expect in a typical chain hotel. The comfy seating area there provides a laid-back place for business and leisure travelers to relax. Just beyond it, the outdoor patio and pool which this eco-oriented property shares with Starwood’s adjacent Aloft outpost, have a livelier vibe, and Element guests can access its music and happy hour drink specials.

Location

An outlying setting, close to office parks, shopping malls and golf courses

This hotel offers close proximity to Doral’s assorted services. But -- despite its name -- it's not situated near Miami. Outside of rush hour, the city is 24 minutes away by car, and getting to Miami Beach takes even more time. Nevertheless, convenient access to office parks (the closest being Westpointe) means the place is appealing to business travelers, while a pair of large nearby malls make it an attractive option for off-the-clock corporate types as well as garden-variety vacationers. Guests can also drive to two highly regarded golfing venues (the Jim McLean Signature Course and Trump National Doral Golf Club) in 10 minutes or less. Note that the hotel provides a free shuttle to Miami International Airport, which lies 22 minutes southeast; free on-site parking and free on-request bicycles are available, too.

  • Six-minute drive to Miami International Mall
  • Six-minute drive to Westpointe Business Park
  • Seven-minute drive to Jim McLean Signature Course
  • Eight-minute drive to Dolphin Mall
  • 10-minute drive to Trump National Doral Golf Club
  • 20-minute drive to Miami International Airport
  • 20-minute drive to Little Havana
  • 22-minute drive to Coral Gables
  • 24-minute-drive to Miami
  • 33-minute drive to Miami Beach

Rooms

Well-designed, earth-sensitive rooms that cater to discerning travelers

In keeping with the aesthetic of the common areas below, the accommodations here -- ranging in size from 310- to 523-square feet -- have a muted minimalist look that’s both stylish and comfortable. They’re equally functional, thanks to ergonomically designed work spaces, generously proportioned bathrooms with walk-in rainfall showers, and kitchenettes kitted out with stainless-steel ENERGY STAR appliances plus the requisite utensils. All also feature signature Heavenly Beds, ironing equipment, digital safes, swiveling 32-inch flat-screen TVs, outlet pads with USB charging ports, connectivity panels that easily connect a laptop screen to the TV, and free Wi-Fi. Upper-category choices boast more complete kitchenettes that add full-sized fridges, cook tops and dishwashers to the standard microwave and mini-fridge combo, along with extra square footage, and, in some cases, separate living rooms.

Features

A green hotel with a breakfast bar, a pool, plus lots of freebies

Environmentally minded guests will applaud the minimal-impact practices this LEED-certified hotel employs. In addition to a comprehensive recycling program, these range from the use of low-VOS paint, recycled-content carpets, energy-efficient appliances, and water-efficient faucets to the choice of cleaning products. Even if going green isn't a compelling part of your travel plan, most will appreciate the clean feel of the saline pool that sits between Element and the neighboring Aloft Hotel (it’s a gentle alternative to chlorine). This shared space also includes a patio area with a fire pit and communal barbecue. The latter may come in handy as there’s no restaurant per se; however, a healthy free buffet (think smoothies, granola, fresh fruit and espresso coffees) is laid out each morning in the rather congested breakfast bar. Furthermore, free drinks and nibbles are served each weekday evening in the lobby, and other items are available for purchase 24/7 in the gourmet "pantry."

Additional on-site features include a round-the-clock reception desk; a large, well-outfitted fitness room with cardio machines, strength-training equipment and more; add-on dry-cleaning/laundry and grocery-delivery services; a free lobby business center with computers and printers; plus free Wi-Fi throughout. Those traveling with pets will be happy to know the hotel not only welcomes pooches at no charge -- it supplies each with a bowl, bed, and treats.
