Bottom Line

Opened in 2015, the upscale Hyatt Centric is a small hotel by Collins Avenue standards, with boutique-like features and sleek, contemporary accents. The first Hyatt property in South Beach, it's not as upscale as the Loews across the street or as luxurious as the nearby Ritz-Carlton, but it is less expensive and has a far more laid-back vibe. The 105 fresh rooms feature plush beds and 47-inch flat-screen TVs. An innovative restaurant serves Spanish-Mediterranean cuisine and the hotel has a small pool, but is not right on the beach. Chairs are available for free through the Loews hotel, but there are fees for umbrellas.

Oyster Hotel Review

Hyatt Centric South Beach Miami

Scene

Boutique-like hotel with stylish interiors

The Hyatt Centric is housed in a distinctive 10-story building with lots of glass and big windows. Guests enter to a foyer with benches, a couple of potted plants, and a colorful mural with a wave pattern. Elevators lead to the third-floor lobby, featuring an open-plan design that gives the space the feel of a stylish living room rather than a hotel lobby. The colors are muted and restrained, with lots of grey, beige, brown, and navy blue. Interiors have a more urban look, and the hotel is not as "beach-y" in its decor as other South Beach properties. The lobby features two wood reception desks, some sofas, a wall-mounted flat-screen TV, and shelves with books and art objects. Sliding glass doors open to the bar's patio overlooking the pool deck with lounge chairs and daybeds. Guests enjoy beach access at the Loews Hotel across the street. The Hyatt Centric tends to attract a young, hip crowd that is not as excessively trendy or party-hard as many other South Beach hotels.

Rooms

Contemporary rooms with plush beds and large flat-screen TVs

The Hyatt Centric has 105 all non-smoking rooms. Rooms come in Standard, View, Deluxe, Suite, and Accessible categories and range from 300 to 587 square feet. Rooms aren't luxurious, but they have an upscale boutique feel. The look is minimalist, with largely bare white walls, and a white, grey, and beige color palette with dashes of color in the abstract wall art. Some of the closets are painted aqua blue. Furnishings are contemporary mixed with mid-century, vintage elements. Some rooms feature window seating and seating at the end of the bed. They are clean, quiet, and get good natural light. All rooms come with desks and ergonomic chairs, full-length mirrors, in-room safes, coffee/tea makers, mini-bars (item prices are high), and plush Hyatt Grand Beds with thick pillow-top mattresses. The flat-screen 47-inch HDTVs feature premium cable and Bluetooth technology, which allows guests to connect their phones remotely and project on the TV. Panels allow laptops, MP3 players, video game systems, and DVD players to connect to TVs as well. Rooms feature floor-to-ceiling windows, some with ocean views (though there's a lot of architecture cluttering the foreground). Suites have sofa beds. The bathrooms are clean, spacious, and well lighted, with good counter space and premium bath products. The showers feature rainfall and hand-held showers. Bathrooms were created with an open design, which allows people in the bedroom to see into the bathroom, but the hotel is working on installing frosted glass to improve privacy.

Guests can also borrow a bicycle (free of charge) to tool around South Beach. The hotel's restaurant serves innovative Spanish-Mediterranean cuisine, with an emphasis on plates meant for sharing and a seasonal menu highlighting local seafood like Florida shrimp, cuttlefish, and octopus. Room service is available and breakfast is not included in room rates. The bar serves handcrafted cocktails, mojitos, sangria, and an international selection of beers and wines. The hotel also has a 24-hour fitness center, meeting rooms, a business center, uniformed bell service, and concierge service. Valet parking is available, with in-and-out privileges.
