Oyster Hotel Review
Reliable, professional staff offers good restaurant suggestions and fast service.
While there isn't anything remarkable about the service, I can't find any fault.
On arrival, two porters grabbed my bags before I could pay my cab driver. Check-in is simple, very professional.
All of the employees wear nametags that list their passion -- "my passion is cooking," "my passion is music," etc. -- but, not surprisingly, the staff doesn't like talking about their flair.
Fresh towels came in minutes. They never gave me a hassle about checking out a half-hour late. As for lunch recommendations, they actually gave me some great options instead of shoving me off to the Cheesecake Factory (as they did at the nearby, Ritz Carlton Coconut Grove).
Restaurants and shops are around the corner, and parks are just outside.
I could spot Coco Walk from my room, but the block or so walk to get there felt a little uncomfortable due to the slightly heavy traffic.
Still, guests can walk out front and see the yachts, the parks, and still have plenty to eat, drink, and buy right around the corner.
Despite the quiet atmosphere and large bathroom, small rooms include a huge TV with bad reception, two twin beds pushed together, and few outlets.
The room where I stayed has a huge bathroom, but considering that it is about the same size as the rest of my room, I felt a bit cramped. The porter didn't know where to put my things (my bags wouldn't fit in the closet, as most space is taken up by their safe), so I had to leave my bags on the floor. Stepping over them every time I walked to the bathroom got annoying quickly.
The desk, flush to the wall, is next to the dresser, about 18 inches from the bed (which is actually two twins shoved together with a pad over it to look like a king). The pad, fortunately, is thick enough so that I didn't notice the two divided beds until midway through the night, when my back adjusted to the vertical crease.
The TV is big, but reception is poor. I might not have noticed, but the 42-inch screen is just 3 feet from the bed, forcing me to watch the Daily Show like I was sitting in the front row of a movie theater.
I struggled to find enough outlets and had to swap the coffeemaker with the desk lamp, with my laptop, with my phone charger. They do have a fairly comfortable desk chair (which is hard to come by).
Though reviewers on TripAdvisor complain of noisy City View rooms that require ear plugs and tranquilizers, I didn't have a problem. This is because the source of the sound, Nikki Beach Club, has since closed.
The place is equipped like a luxury condo (because it is one). All of its facilities are clean and consistently operational.
The rooftop gym overlooks the city and has new Cybrex strength-training equipment and plenty of cardio machines. The gym is better than the Ritz Carlton Coconut Grove, or anywhere else in Miami (short of a full, syndicated gym like the David Barton at the Gansevoort or the Sports Club/LA at the Four Seasons). Too bad it closes at 10p.m.
The squash court is well-maintained. It is a popular spot for the local lawyers, doctors, and well-to-do 9 to 5-ers who served to remind me that people actually work in Miami (forgive the play-on-words).
The pool is small, but the view over the bay inspired me to take up sailing (or at least own more pristine boat shoes). Though the pool closes at 10p.m., swimming after 7p.m. can feel a little awkward with the dim-lit terrace restaurant full and directly facing the empty pool.
The business center was new when I stayed there. It is well-equipped and has impressively comfortable mesh/memory-foam chairs. But printing a single page costs 50 cents.
I did spot a good number of strollers on site, perhaps due to the one-bedroom suites with full kitchens and the restaurant's kid's menus.
Everything is clean and well-maintained, except for a few scruffs and stains.
Though lacking the high-polished luster, the rooms and facilities are all reasonably clean and well-maintained, ignoring a few stains in the carpet and scuffs on the walls (from luggage being dragged past). But even my highly scrutinizing eyes couldn't find a substantive flaw.
