Bottom Line

The 32 rooms here are quite large for the area and are clean but a bit sterile. The hotel is situated on the large, flat plains leading up to Mont-St-Michel and it's the last hotel before the access road. There's a free shuttle service to the island; it is also possible to walk there in about 30 minutes. Some guests have complained of being bumped to a nearby hotel because of tour group bookings.

Oyster Hotel Review

Le Relais Saint-Michel

Scene

Basic hotel catering to individuals and large groups

A low-lying reinforced-concrete hotel situated on the flats leading up to Mont-St-Michel, the Relais lacks the historic charm of the old hotels on the island, but it's comfortable and well-maintained. The common areas are characterized by a slightly eclectic and dated mix of interior design and decoration that includes Doric columns, bronze animal statuettes, and brown velour couches. The hotel is particularly popular with Japanese tour groups.

Location

A 30-minute walk to the Mont Saint-Michel; about 10 minutes via shuttle

The property is the last hotel before the beginning of the access road that leads to Mont Saint-Michel. As a result, the Relais has spectacular views of the island from the common areas and some of the rooms. It is possible to walk to the island during low tide in about 30 minutes; most take the free shuttle bus, which takes around 10 minutes.

Rooms

Large and plain rooms, some with spectacular views

The rooms here are large but sparsely decorated and resemble dated furniture showrooms. All rooms have lacquered wood headboards and dressers, wall-to-wall gray carpeting, and Queen Anne chairs with floral upholstery. They come with small wall-mounted flat-screen TVs and some have small concrete balconies with a table and chairs. There's no air-conditioning and some rooms have windows that do not open—guests have commented this combination can make summer stays quite uncomfortable.

Features

Restaurant and free shuttle to Mont-St-Michel

The food here is expensive and gets mixed reviews, although this seems to be the norm in most hotels both on and near Mont-St-Michel. Both the indoor dining room and the outdoor terrace have spectacular views of the island. A small gift shop sells regional products, and there's a large meeting room with several conference tables. A free shuttle to Mont Saint-Michel stops just in front of the hotel.
