Bottom Line

It may be one of many old inns sprinkled throughout Carmel's beautiful tree-lined streets, but the 38-room Carmel Lodge feels a bit more run-down than the others, which may be why it is scheduled to be torn down in 2013 and rebuilt from the ground up. Still, the location is excellent -- just blocks from grocery stores, local restaurants, and coffee shops -- and the hotel is one of the only dog-friendly lodges in Carmel. Rooms are comfortable, with simple designs, cute shutters, and average bathrooms (though some shower heads are rusting). Most small inns within Carmel offer plenty of free perks, and this one isn't too different except for the annoying parking fee. With virtually zero places to relax on-site, however, Carmel Lodge may be an okay place to sleep -- beware of heat waves, because there's no air-conditioning -- but there isn't much else to see or do on premises.

Carmel Lodge

Location

A great place for strolling through Carmel's charming streets while still being a 20-minute walk from the beach

Located on a beautiful tree-lined street in downtown Carmel, the immediate area offers a charming, quaint vibe with plenty of restaurants, bars, and cute shopping boutiques within walking distance. With the free off-street parking (or paid parking on-site), it's the perfect place to park the car and walk to explore the area. While the beach is about a 20-minute walk away, it's still easily accessible, especially if guests opt for taking the car.

  • 1- to 5-minute walk to various restaurants, boutiques, and bars
  • 13-minute walk to Forest Theater
  • 20-minute walk to Carmel Beach
  • 5-minute drive to Carmel Mission
  • 7-minute drive to Tor House, home of famous poet Robinson Jeffers
  • 8-minute drive to Pebble Beach Golf Course
  • 10-minute drive to Gravity Garden
  • 15-minute drive to Point Lobos
