Bottom Line

The 25-room Seven Gables Inn is a charming historic bed-and-breakfast with gorgeous interiors featuring original antiques, heavy embroidered drapes, and beautiful stained-glass windows. Rooms are frilly and old-fashioned, but have modern comforts such as iPod docks and H20 toiletries, and all have expansive ocean views. Few rooms have TVs, and kids under 12 are not allowed, which adds to the peaceful and romantic atmosphere. A hearty continental breakfast is served in a quaint dining room with stunning ocean views, and a free wine and cheese hour is held daily. The location across the street from Lovers Point Beach and a short walk from Lighthouse Avenue provides easy access to nature trails, shops, restaurants, and art galleries. This is arguably the best option in Pacific Grove; The Old St. Angela Inn and Gosby House Inn are other homey options to consider, but neither are right on the water.

Seven Gables Inn-Oceanfront Inn

Scene

Historic bed-and-breakfast with Victorian interiors and unobstructed ocean views

First built in 1886 and further expanded in 1946, the Seven Gables Inn looks charming from the outside. Seven quaint yellow buildings with large bay windows and pitched slate roofs house the property’s 25 rooms, and manicured grounds dotted with plants and flowers are inviting and cute. Interiors are packed with beautifully restored fine antiques and pieces of period-style furniture, including tufted chaise lounges, painted vases, Louis XVI chairs, and classic paintings with ornate golden frames. Ceiling moldings, cream-colored upholstered walls, and delicate crystal chandeliers lend an elegant look to common areas, while plush armchairs, fireplaces, and large windows with postcard-perfect views are romantic touches. With an adult-only policy and a serene vibe, the property draws mostly couples looking to enjoy a quiet weekend by the sea.

Rooms

Classic, elegant rooms with period furniture, modern amenities, and stunning ocean views

The hotel has 25 rooms, all featuring large windows with wonderful ocean views. Decor is classic and ornate throughout, with fine antiques, period-style furniture, and rich fabrics. Although all have the same elegant style, each unit has its own individual design. Some have fireplaces, cream-colored carpets, canopy beds, and tin ceilings, while others feature stained-glass windows, delicate crystal chandeliers, heavy wooden armoires, and hardwood floors. Some armchairs have dark flower-printed upholstery that looks more dated than classic, but the overall feel is stately and upscale.

Only a few rooms have TVs or mini-fridges, but all units are equipped with iPod docks and Wi-Fi is free in rooms and throughout the hotel. Additionally, all rooms come with a few boutiquey touches, such as free cereal bars, bottled water, and binoculars. Bathrooms are basic for a hotel in this price range, with shower/tub combos, sinks with basic taps, and plain tan tiles. H20 toiletries are a nice touch. Turndown service complete with a sweet treat is offered every night. Note that past guests have complained of thin walls, so light sleepers may want to bring a pair of earplugs.
