Bottom Line

The Hilton Montreal Bonaventure is an upscale, 395-room property with extensive conference facilities and a convenient downtown Montreal location across from Central Station and within walking distance of Old Montreal. A good choice for business travelers as well as families, the penthouse hotel has a unique rooftop garden, a heated outdoor pool, and a classy restaurant. Rooms are equipped with large desks, air-conditioning, and coffeemakers as well as views of the garden, pool, or city skyline. However, the neutral-contemporary decor lacks character and travelers who want more stylish digs may be better off at the slightly pricier Loews Hotel Vogue.

Hotel Bonaventure Montreal

Scene

Business hotel with chain decor and rooftop garden on the top of an office building

Hilton Montreal Bonaventure is located in Place Bonaventure, an office, exhibition, and hotel complex in downtown Montreal. The Brutalist concrete facade isn't very cheerful, though the decor inside is nice, but typical for a chain property. The reception area features lots of oak paneling and marble floors while hallways are lined with abstract artwork and striped carpets that clash with bright pink armchairs. However, the beautifully landscaped rooftop garden elevates the scene, and greenery is visible from many interior spaces -- including a pleasant sitting area in the lobby, where cream-colored upholstered couches sit beside a wall of windows. Le Castillon restaurant is a carpeted, lodge-like space with stone accent walls, dark-wood beams, dramatic chandeliers, and a fireplace; there's outdoor seating on a stone terrace amid the garden as well. Guests also gather at Le Belvedere, a modernist bistro-bar with wood paneling and wooden screens extending up to a dramatic skylight. The hotel draws many business guests, though families and tourist couples will also feel comfortable here.

Rooms

Classic business-style rooms with large desks and good views

Modern guest rooms have a classic business-hotel style and while the contemporary, neutral decor is typical, there are a few luxury touches, such as eye-catching upholstered or leather headboards and granite-topped dark-wood furniture. Red sofa-beds or armchairs and black-and-white photography add a bit of sophistication, while metal geometric lamps and crisp white bedding on comfortable beds brighten up the mostly tan and brown rooms. All rooms have large desks with ergonomic chairs, coffeemakers, mini-fridges, safes, air-conditioning, and flat-screen TVs, as well as city, garden, or pool views with opening windows. Spacious bathrooms are done in slightly outdated (but elegant and clean) beige granite, and have large vanities, shower/tub combos, hairdryers, and high-end Peter Thomas Roth toiletries. Rooms with sofa beds are ideal for families, and Suites with additional seating are available for guests who need extra space to stretch out.

Heated outdoor pool, French restaurant, fitness center, and Internet cafe

The hotel has a large, heated outdoor pool with a poolside bar that's open year-round and is accessible via an indoor tunnel. Despite its size, the pool can get busy at times, especially when convention guests and group tours are booked in the hotel. Le Castillon restaurant serves market-fresh French cuisine for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and Le Belvedere bistro-bar in the lobby serves drinks and light meals for lunch and dinner, however, no meals are included with bookings. The hotel includes a mini-mart and has a large, windowless fitness center with standard cardio and weight equipment as well as a stretching room. The on-site convention complex has 34 multipurpose meeting rooms and there is a business center on-site with computers for guest use as well as printing/copying services and free Wi-Fi throughout. Babysitting and kids' activities can also be arranged, but cost extra, as do laundry, dry cleaning services, and valet parking.
