Bottom Line

The lower-middle-range, 47-room Hotel St-Denis offers simple yet clean and spacious rooms at an attractive price. It's centrally located on bustling St-Denis, surrounded by restaurants and shops, and a three-minute walk to a subway station. But, amenities are sparse, with no on-site parking, no breakfast, or even coffee available in the lobby. And furnishings are a touch old-fashioned and worn. While attractively priced in a convenient location, there are many other similar hotels with more amenities in central Montreal, so it’s wise to compare rates and amenities before booking. The nearby Auberge Le Pomerol is another option with free breakfast and on-site parking.

Hotel St-Denis

Scene

A small lobby and comfortable sitting area

Entering the hotel through wood-and-glass doors brings guests to a modern lobby area with light gray tile floors and gray walls. It’s a rather narrow lobby dominated by a wooden front desk and wood-framed artwork on the walls. Nearby are a few black leather chairs to sit while others check in. The lobby leads to a cozy sitting area with several more leather chairs clustered around a coffee table. The spot lighting and red-and-black color palette is slightly reminiscent of the '80s, but it's not overtly dated. Two computer stations that comprise the hotel’s business center are in the corner of the long room that has nice hardwood flooring. A table holds the day’s newspapers, and various travel brochures and flyers occupy another table. Another set of black and red chairs sit in front of a large flat-screen TV mounted on an exposed brick wall, and a vending machine is within sight. With no on-site dining facilities, this room is the quiet property’s sole gathering place.

Location

In central Montreal a brief walk from the subway station and attractions

The Hotel St-Denis is located in the Quartier des Spectacles entertainment district adjacent to the University of Quebec in central Montreal. It's a lively area with lots of students and surrounded by restaurants along St-Denis and nearby Rue St. Catherine. The short three-minute walk to the Berri-UQAM subway station makes this property convenient to anywhere in the city. Old Montreal is a 13-minute walk; Gay Village a 14-minute walk; and Place des Arts a 10-minute walk. Trudeau Airport is a 25-minute drive, and City Centre is a seven-minute drive. The immediate area does have a visible homeless population, but it's considered generally safe.

Rooms

Spacious, simple rooms with nice hardwood floors and furniture

Rooms have either one king or two full beds, and both are spacious in rectangular layouts that tend to be longer and narrower than typical hotel rooms. The two full beds are tucked into one end of the room with little space near the walls. The king has a bit more room. An upholstered couch rests at the other end of the room in front of a wood coffee table and next to two tasteful floor lamps. Decor and layout are simple and a touch old-fashioned with white walls, reddish pink bedspreads, red and green striped drapes, and attractive hardwood floors with matching wood furniture that shows a few signs of wear. A side table with casters holds the flat-screen TV, so it can be wheeled in front of the bed or couch. The coffee table also has casters. A work desk with chair rests against one wall, and a mini-fridge sits next to a desk with a coffeemaker on top. Free Wi-Fi is offered in all rooms. Views are either of the street in front, an interior courtyard, or a back lot area. Bathrooms are small but fresh and clean with white porcelain pedestal sinks, large mirrors, off-white wall and floor tiles, and shower/tub combos with curtains. But there's no countertop space, and some rooms have a cramped toilet/sink areas.
