Bottom Line

The Sofitel Montreal is a 258-room luxury property on posh Sherbrooke Street in downtown Montreal, a few blocks from Mont Royal Park. The hotel is a good choice for business travelers seeking artsy sophistication, and for those visiting McGill University, which is next door. Guest rooms are luxe, with such creative decor touches as Impressionist-style paintings and black-and-white framed photographs, and come equipped with goose-feather bedding and floor-to-ceiling windows. The hotel has an upscale restaurant that serves seasonal French cuisine, and an elegant event space. The fitness center, however, is tiny with outdated equipment. Guests might want to compare rates at the nearby Omni Mont-Royal Hotel, which has a somewhat larger fitness center and a pool.

Sofitel Montreal Golden Mile

Scene

Artsy and sophisticated interiors at a luxury chain property in a posh neighborhood

Sofitel is a luxury brand of hotels, and the Sofitel Montreal, perched on posh Sherbrooke Street in downtown Montreal, is no different, with its towering concrete-and-glass facade. Inside, the lobby is bright with natural light and filled with creative touches: a metal stairway extending up and across the room, massive Jurassic-Park-like plants, a colorful Picasso-esque rug, and clean-lined black and white leather seating. There are wood-and-glass shelves displaying jewelry for sale and built-in wooden bookshelves against a wall, giving the room something of an urban-museum/gift-shop look. Hallways, however, can be somewhat dark, with their blah gray carpeting and wood paneling. The on-site restaurant, Renoir, is also somewhat underwhelming in its aesthetic, although the floor-to-ceiling windows and dramatic modern-gothic chandeliers do jazz up the basic white tablecloths and beige chairs. Clientele includes an upscale crowd of business travelers, tourists, and visitors to McGill University.

Rooms

Modern and artistic, with plush beds and luxe touches

Guest rooms at the Sofitel Montreal are a mix of artsy touches and clean-lined, modern furnishings. Colorful Impressionist-style paintings accent Luxury King Rooms, which come with modern light-wood paneling and stylish, block-patterned ottomans, Keurig coffeemakers, well-stocked minibars, and marble bathrooms with separate glassed-in showers and shower/tub combos. All rooms have floor-to-ceiling windows, goose-feather comforters and pillows on the plush SoBeds, flat-screen TVs, Bose radio alarm clocks with iPod docks, and gray-veined marble bathrooms with rainfall showerheads and Lanvin products. The result is a quiet luxury that shies away from trendy additions.

Features

Upscale restaurant and bar, meeting space, and small gym with sauna

The Sofitel Montreal stands out for its sophisticated interiors and location on Sherbrooke Street. Its upscale Renoir restaurant, which offers a tasting menu, serves fresh, seasonal French fare -- including oysters and rich breakfast dishes such as raisin-brioche French Toast. Le Bar, a full-service cocktail/wine/Champagne bar, has a lounge atmosphere and a warm-weather terrace. The hotel has a small, somewhat dated (but clean) gym and a petite sauna, a business center, and event space for business functions, weddings, and parties. Wi-Fi is free, but the signal can be shaky.
