Dar Silsila

This charming riad is tucked away on a narrow, pedestrian-only street. Similar to other traditional riads, Dar Silsila features an open courtyard with an orange tree and a small reflecting pool. The space is exceedingly tranquil, and has white-washed walls, mosaic tile, and carved wood doors leading to several cozy nooks to sit and relax. But the fabulous rooftop terrace is the crowing jewel at this property, which boasts superb views of the old city. Guests of the hotel -- mostly couples on romantic getaways and sightseeing excursions -- often eat breakfast here, or enjoy a cup of mint tea after a day of exploring Marrakech. 

The riad is located in a peaceful, mostly residential area inside the medina, which dates from the 11th-century and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The quarter is filled with souks, cafes, and tons of tourists. It's about a 10-minute walk from the hotel to the legendary Jemaa el-Fna square and marketplace, and several restaurants and shops are just steps from the hotel. No cars are allowed in this district, but there's a taxi stand a few minutes away on foot. Marrakech Menara International Airport is approximately a 16-minute taxi ride.

Guest rooms at Dar Silsila feature a mix of fine Moroccan antiques and modern decor, and look smart and polished. Dark-wood doors are framed with traditional decorative carving, there are stamped metal mirrors and chandeliers with colorful glass stones, and floors have intricate brickwork. These heavier elements blend well with more contemporary touches, like wrought iron chairs covered in energetic animal prints, and walls accented with muted jewel and earth tones. Standard amenities include air-conditioning, laptop-size safes, and free Wi-Fi, but there are no TVs. Bathrooms are similarly styled, and have tile vanities with basin sinks, roomy walk-in showers with handheld showerheads, hairdryers, and toiletries. 

Reviews from past guests regarding housekeeping and upkeep are decidedly mixed. Some say rooms are tidy and comfortable, while others say they're unclean and that there are maintenance issues. All units are generally quiet, however. 

This small hotel's star feature is its bi-level rooftop terrace, where a free continental breakfast and dinner (by reservation only) is served. The space has sun loungers, a canopied sunbed, a pergola, and plants in terra-cotta pots. 

Other freebies include coffee and tea all day, mint tea and pastries upon arrival, and Wi-Fi throughout. There are also concierge services for booking tours and making reservations, and for laundry service and arranging airport transfers (fee). The hotel provides porters to transport luggage from the taxi drop-off areas, and the reception desk is staffed 24/7. Guests with limited mobility should be aware that the hotel doesn't have an elevator.
