Bottom Line

The upscale Hivernage Hotel & Spa is an 85-room, traditionally styled property located in the swanky area of the same name set within walking distance of the medina. Rooms are polished and modern, if lacking the same level of Moroccan charm found in the Marrakech's other upscale properties; some have balconies and private hammams but the free Wi-Fi can be patchy. While excellent dining and a rooftop bar are huge pluses, the outdoor pool is a letdown with poor design meaning little sun and no views. All in all, it doesn't quite achieve the heights of luxury it seems to strive for, but makes for a decent upscale hotel in the attempt.

Hivernage Hotel and Spa

Scene

Chic, traditional Moroccan hotel with modern, upscale vibe

Approaching the Hivernage Hotel & Spa between rows of palm trees, visitors see little more than a slim pastel pink facade marked by a traditional Moroccan hanging lantern. The exterior is adorned with traditional architectural features such as enclosed balconies decorated with latticework, and anelegantly arched doorway. Inside the low-lit lobby, the attractive Moroccan styling continues with plush purple furnishings, rough-cut and polished natural stone, and a sculpted wooden ceiling. Built in 2005 and totally renovated in 2008, the property exudes a smart, modern atmosphere throughout. Superb views of the surroundings are found on the seventh floor rooftop terrace. The hotel's chic, upscale vibe tends to attract more well-heeled tourists or couples splashing out on a romantic treat.

Location

On the edge of the swanky Hivernage district within walking distance of the medina

The hotel is located on the edge of the upmarket Hivernage neighborhood overlooking the Bab Jdid gate that leads to old town Marrakech. In the immediate area there are several upscale boutiques -- including Louis Vuitton next door -- as well as the El Badi Palace and Katoubia Mosque both within a few blocks. One of Medina's main attractions Djemaa el-Fna -- the Old City's main square surrounded by souks and labyrinthine streets -- is around 15 minutes away on foot. The Sidi Mimoun bus terminal is also just a few minutes' walk away while Marrakech Menara International Airport is just 10 minutes' drive.

Rooms

Polished, modern rooms, some with balconies and private steam baths

The hotel has 85 rooms, all of which are styled in a blend of refined Moroccan decor -- colorful tiles and traditional carved woods -- and smart modern touches. In the lower-tier rooms in particular, the overall effect is a bit generic; there are other upscale hotels that deliver much more individualized local style. Amenities include (non-alcoholic) minibars, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen TVs with a good choice of English-speaking channels -- though Internet coverage can be patchy in parts. Superior Rooms open to balconies overlooking the Koutoubia mosque (the largest in Marrakech), while Deluxe Suites also have private hammams and hydro-massage tubs. Every bathroom, however, includes a tub, hairdryer, and robes and slippers. Despite lots of rooms overlooking the street, traffic noise is not an issue and blackout blinds also aid a restful night's sleep.

Features

Excellent dining and superb rooftop panoramas

The main restaurant, the Table du Marché, is part of the Christophe Leroy brand and offers one of the area's more refined dining experiences -- while more informal ambience can be found in the La boutique de la table French bakery and restaurant. The hotel swimming pool surrounded by a pleasant decked terrace with loungers, though the pool is enclosed and sits mostly in the shade -- meaning the water can get cold and there's little in the way of a view. The Terraké spa, however, has a heated pool as well as five treatment rooms offering massages, essential oil bath, and aromatherapy. Great views can also be found from the hotel's seventh-floor roof terrace with its MySky bar, patio heaters for chilly evenings, and plenty of seating to go with the panoramas of the city and snow covered peaks of Atlas Mount beyond. Wi-Fi is free, but can be unreliable.
