Bottom Line

The 200-room Hotel Amine is a resort-style budget property in the new city, about a 20-minute walk to the center of Gueliz and a 15-minute cab ride to the medina. Consisting of four buildings grouped around a large (unheated) swimming pool set within pleasant gardens, the hotel offers organized activities, and has a traditional hammam with various scrubs and massages available. The on-site restaurant offers terrace seating, and there's a poolside snack bar. Rooms have air-conditioning and balconies, but TVs are tube-style, there's no in-room Wi-Fi, and the decor is dated. Rates, though, are incredibly low. Guests who want a little more pizzazz in their decor, for slightly higher rates, might want to consider the nearby Moroccan House Hotel.

Hotel Amine

Scene

Grand entrance and pleasant gardens but dated, tired decor that could use a refresh

Guests pass under an impressively grand arched entrance before arriving at the parking area and the pastel-pink facade of the low-rise reception building of the Hotel Amine. Inside, the lobby decor offers plenty of traditional Moroccan flavor, including a large centerpiece patterned rug and a beautifully adorned carved cedar-wood ceiling, together with a seating area with an abundance of plump armchairs and couches. The hotel is spread across four four-story buildings arranged around a large swimming pool and terrace separated from the road by thick hedge. While the surrounding gardens are pleasant enough, with plenty of roses bushes, palm trees, and tidy lawns, the property, which is reportedly up for sale, feels dated -- with a few dingy corners -- and in need of renovation.

Rooms

Rooms have balconies but could use a refresh

The hotel has 200 rooms with white tile floors, yellow comforters, mostly bare walls, and a few Moroccan touches (the occasional rug or painted embellishment, such as those on the entry doors), but the basic furnishings show signs of wear. Rooms include tube-style TVs and telephones -- but there's no Wi-Fi or mini-fridges. Most rooms open onto furnished balconies that overlook the garden. Bathrooms have shower/tub combos, but are in need of renovation -- at the very least, the tiles need regrouting. Guests have complained about inadequate heating in the winter.
