  • No Wi-Fi in rooms

Bottom Line

The 18-room Kasbah Caracalla is a mid-range, Moroccan fortress-style property set in a walled garden in a remote location. Marrakech's medina is a good 40-minute drive away (free shuttle service is available), but the property offers fine scenery, a relaxing outdoor pool, and proximity to Toubkal National Park. Views of the Atlas Mountains are indeed impressive and are visible from most parts of the property (on a clear day). Rooms are clean, colorful, and full of Moroccan character, though in-room amenities are a bit sparse -- there is no Wi-Fi available. Those also hoping to stay in the heart of the medina after visiting the Atlas Mountains might consider the similarly priced Riad les Orangers d'Alilia Marrakech.

Kasbah Caracalla

Scene

Mid-range hotel set in a kasbah fortress-type building with walled gardens and striking mountain views

Although built in 2007, from its formidable looking entrance to its fortress-like architecture, the Kasbah Caracalla looks every inch an authentic 19th-century Arabian citadel. Once inside, the scene is much more refined though no less traditional, where new arrivals sip mint tea surrounded by Moroccan lamps, heavy drapery, and intricate wrought ironwork detailing. The hotel is set in a three-hectare estate comprising of well-tended, flower-filled gardens dotted with olive groves and orange trees -- the silence only occasionally broken by the caw of one of its resident peacocks. The superlative views beyond the property's earthen walls of the snow-topped Atlas Mountains are the main event. The overall atmosphere is peaceful, relaxing, and a touch romantic.

Location

Remote and peaceful setting a 40-minute drive south of Marrakech's medina

The Kasbah Caracalla stands at the end of a mile-long dirt track set in the Moroccan countryside about a 40-minute drive south of the medina. The hotel does run a free daily shuttle service to and from Marrakech, though it tends to return before dark. It takes about the same amount of time to Menara Airport though a fee is charged for airport transfers. The position is convenient, however, for tours to Atlas Mountain and around the Ourika Valley, which can be organized through the hotel.

Rooms

Colorful, traditionally styled rooms -- though no Wi-Fi

The hotel has eight rooms and 10 suites in all, each one individually styled with traditional Moroccan decor, colorful and patterned fabrics, and carved wood furnishings. Besides air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs, in-room amenities are fairly limited, with Wi-Fi only available in the hotel lobby. Bathrooms are spacious and appealing, however, decorated with traditional bejmat tiling and have large walk-in rain-fall showers. The property also has three apartments each with two bedrooms, bathrooms, and lounge.

Features

Breakfast overlooking the swimming pool with mountain backdrop

A large outdoor courtyard overlooks the hotel's decent-size swimming pool, which is surrounded by comfy sun loungers and the stunning mountain views in the distance (in clear weather). Breakfast is served overlooking the pool, as are evening aperitifs while the Douirya restaurant serves a menu of Moroccan and international food. Guests can also dine on the panoramic roof terrace, the Bab Atlas, though with only one restaurant and nothing nearby the menu can quickly get too familiar. The hotel also has a simple hammam and a range of massage treatments with locally sourced products. There is no Wi-Fi available in the rooms; guests can connect in the hotel lobby.
