Bottom Line

L'Heure Bleue Palais is a renovated 19th-century luxury riad in Essaouira, and one of the more expensive places to stay in town. It offers 33 dark, stately rooms with marble bathrooms and colonial outfittings like animal-striped accents and leather ottomans. A renowned restaurant offers locally focused fare with an emphasis on seafood, and there are a rooftop patio with a pool, a black marble hammam, and a spa, in addition to a luxurious breakfast buffet included in the room price and offering traditional Moroccan pancakes and products. Decor throughout the hotel is decidedly dark and evokes a throwback to the earlier part of the 20th century. The property has a grandiose feel, though may be showing some signs of wear particularly in the bathrooms.

L’Heure Bleue Palais

Scene

Colonial aesthetic and vibe to this refurbished 19th-century building

The hotel cultivates a distinctly historic old-world formality that draws an upscale clientele and can feel a tad uptight for some guests' taste. Decor includes dark, paneled carved-wood walls throughout, along with decorative tile floors. There are plush fuchsia velour chairs and arched glass doors in the Salon Oriental dining room, the gastronomic center of the property. Tufted leather chairs, taxidermy, and tin and glass chandeliers complete the elegant, slightly sexy, and decidedly opulent feel in the English Lounge. The property, originally built in the late 19th century, is structured around a three-story interior courtyard whose columned walkways look down upon the al fresco area in the center, which is set with cushioned rattan chairs and glass-topped tables. Another highly appealing common space is up on the rooftop terrace, where the dreamy Mediterranean blue and white color scheme extends from sun-loungers to circular rattan beds to slatted-roof cabanas draped in white curtains and decorated with potted cacti.
