Bottom Line

The upscale Lina Ryad & Spa is a beautiful, intimate boutique with gorgeous traditional Moroccan design and an excellent location right in the heart of Chefchaouen’s medina, a short (but sometimes steep) walk from attractions and shopping. It offers 17 charming suites with ample sitting areas, cute stucco bathrooms, and good amenities such as free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and air-conditioning. Some have direct access to the hotel’s shared rooftop terraces, which offer stunning panoramic city and mountain views. The spa is a destination unto itself, complete with a lovely heated indoor pool, a hammam, and a great treatment menu. Breakfast is included in the room rate, and the restaurant also serves excellent regional cuisine for dinner. For something cheaper, consider Dar Echchaouen, located right outside the medina.

Lina Ryad & Spa

Scene

Charming riad with beautiful traditional Moroccan design and stunning views

Housed in a charming traditional building painted the shade of blue Chefchaouen is famous for, the Lina Ryad & Spa is an enchanting, intimate property that fits in well with its surroundings. The building’s layout with rooftop terraces and big windows makes the most of its location atop a hill, with panoramic views of the city and mountains, and tons of natural light. Interiors have been designed in a beautiful traditional Moroccan style, with horseshoe arches, blue and white mosaic tiles, kilims in red hues, and brass lanterns throughout. The plant-lined central courtyard is topped by a large skylight, while all around the building stained-glass windows in blue hues make spaces airy and light. The rooftop area is one of the most attractive of all common spaces, thanks to several tiled decks outfitted with push daybeds that offer stunning 360-degree views of the medina and  imposing mountains. The hotel draws mostly couples seeking a romantic, serene stay, and the atmosphere is usually relaxed and quiet.

Rates are average for an upscale riad in the medina, but travelers on a tighter budget may want to check out Casa Perleta, a charming boutique with a similar location and simpler yet cute rooms. For even less, the mid-range Hotel Casa Miguel is a solid alternative also close to attractions, while Dar Echchaouen is a top pick just outside the medina, complete with a lovely outdoor pool, beautiful architecture, and a restaurant serving traditional Moroccan cuisine.

Location

On a small street in the heart of the medina, walking distance to all attractions

Lina Ryad & Spa is located on a small street in the old city, up a steep slope from the heart of the city center. Those traveling by car need to park outside of the pedestrian area and call the hotel to get some help with luggage and directions, but this is a great location for exploring the narrow, atmospheric alleys of the medina and the city’s attractions on foot. Place Outa el Hammam and the Kasbah, which mark the center of the old city, are just about a 10-minute walk away, as are the imposing Grand Mosque, the Kasbah Museum, and the beautiful Andalusian Gardens. Serene Ras el Maa waterfall is also less than a 10-minute walk east of the hotel. The nearest airport is in Tetouan, about an hour and a half away by car.
