Riad Jonan

This riad was first opened in 2012 and the decor is traditional, with splashes of color here and there. It's centered around a pleasant courtyard and -- with its location in the southern end of the Medina -- is a peaceful escape from the bustling city farther to the north. Guests are welcomed with warm tea and biscuits, which helps set a relaxed tone. The central patio has a small plunge pool plus seating nooks for reading or relaxing. A plant-lined rooftop terrace -- with a small tented area -- offers shaded and sunny spots plus loungers and sofas to take in the views of the surrounding Medina. Given the relaxed, romantic vibe, it's no surprise that couples are the main guests here, but small families occasionally pass through as well. 

Riad Jonan's location at the southern end of the Medina means that the hotel is farther away from some of Marrakech's major attractions. It’s around a 20-minute walk to the main square, Jemaa el-Fna, though there's lots to see along the way (including cafes, restaurants, shops, and markets). A little closer at hand is the El Badii Palace, which will take around eight minutes to reach on foot, while the Moulay El Yazid Mosque is a three-minute walk from the property. The Saadiens Tombs are just a minute away on foot. Arset el Blik, the main bus terminal, can be reached by car in seven minutes, and the airport is just a 10-minute cab ride from the hotel.

The hotel has 11 traditionally-styled rooms, ranging in size from Standard to Deluxe Doubles. Decor mostly features natural, earthy tones, with some splashes of color seen in walls, throws, and accessories. Floors are tiled and laid with patterned rugs for comfort, while distinctive Moroccan touches can be spotted in the carved plaster work, window frames, and doors. Some rooms have TVs and others don't, but all feature air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi (the latter can be spotty). Only some larger units have safes and minibars. Bedrooms are arranged around the central courtyard, which keeps them quiet despite the Medina location. Bathrooms are traditional and won't be to everyone’s tastes -- with older fixtures and fittings, lots of mosaic tiling throughout, and separate shower units in each. Hairdryers are provided, as are basic toiletries and towels. 

This intimate hotel has features that are on par with its competition in the Medina. The courtyard is particularly lovely, and is centered around a small plunge pool, with sunny and shaded seating for reading or relaxing. The secluded, plant-lined rooftop terrace is a highlight, and provides a tranquil spot to take in views of the surrounding Medina. There’s no hammam, but the hotel can book treatments for visitors at nearby venues. Breakfast is generally served on the patio by the fountain, or on the rooftop terrace. The meal is included in the room rates and features hot and cold items like Moroccan crepes, eggs, traditional breads, meats and cheeses, as well as tea, coffee, and freshly squeezed juice. The restaurant is also open for lunches and dinners, though advanced reservations are required. Airport transfers can be arranged for a fee and Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
