Bottom Line

Euro Youth Hotel is a hostel-style property that caters to a young, party crowd. The two-pearl property is outside the immediate city center, but it's still within walking distance of most attractions and public transportation. Its 58 rooms range from dorms with shared bathrooms to private rooms with flat-screen TVs, and en-suite bathrooms. Features here include a breakfast buffet (included in some rates), discounted parking, walking tours, and a lively bar that has weekly events and a fun crowd. However, deposits for room keys, hairdryers, lockers, and other small items is a bit bothersome, and the hotel is not air-conditioned. Travelers might also want to check out Arthotel Munich, where all rooms have private baths and include breakfast -- for slightly higher rates.

Euro Youth Hotel

Scene

Young, lively hostel with an elegant lobby

This property draws the young, hip, and fun-loving. A cross between a hostel and a hotel -- it's not quite either -- the Euro Youth Hotel opened in 1998 and is designed to encourage socializing. It's housed in a salmon-and-tan stone building with bright-blue signage. The interior is surprisingly elegant, and offers a respite from the pop-art, over-the-top, and often down-at-the heels look of most hostels. The brick front desk is accented by glossy floors, pale-yellow walls with red trim, and a bright central chandelier. From the reception area, guests can enter the bar, a charming spot that continues the elegant vibe with glass chandeliers suspended above. The floor is checkered and walls have framed exposed brick in some spots and hanging black-and-white photographs in others. In the evenings, this spot becomes the hub of the hotel, with plenty of past guests praising its warm atmosphere.

Rooms

Basic dorms or private rooms with shared or en-suite bathrooms

There's a range of rooms available at Euro Youth Hotel from dorm-style to private; all are basic but clean with handmade wooden beds, foam mattresses, wooden floors, and splashes of color in the curtains, posters, and art prints. Dorm rooms hold up to 12 bunk beds, free lockers (locks are available for a fee), and shared bathrooms. Some dorms have couches or tables and chairs for sitting. Each bed is outfitted with wall lamps, small shelves, and power outlets. Bottom bunks have privacy curtains. There’s a maximum age limit of 35 in the dorm rooms.

Private rooms have a mix of en-suite and shared bathrooms, and include open closets, safes (for a deposit), and flat-screen TVs. Private rooms also include breakfast and towels, but all rooms include sheets and daily housekeeping. Bathrooms are basic and fairly clean, whether they’re en-suite or not. All have showers and toilets. Shared bathrooms for the dorms aren’t always on the same floor, which might bother some guests. There's also a plethora of deposits required for such basics as room keys, TV remotes, safes, hairdryers, and travel adapters.

Features

Bar with happy hour and other events, walking tours, breakfast, and Wi-Fi, laundry room, and lockers

Euro Youth Hotel is praised for having an environment that makes it easy to socialize with ease, and that starts with its features. The bar is the highlight of the hotel, and hosts live music one night every weekend, as well as themed parties, karaoke, beer pong, game-day viewing parties, and quiz nights. It also has a lively happy hour, and guests get free drinks when they book directly with the hotel. Though there’s no communal kitchen (it’s against Munich laws, apparently), there are other socializing features. Guests can grab a free walking tour or get to know one another over board games or a cup of free tea, or through the book exchange. A breakfast of eggs and pastries and the like is served every morning. It's included in the rate for private rooms; otherwise it's a small fee. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and there are desktop computers, along with a coin-operated laundry. Parking is available in a nearby garage at a discount.
