Bottom Line

The Hotel Uhland is a clean 25-room property on a quiet residential street about a 10-minute walk from the main train station and 25 minutes' walk from Marienplatz. This mid-range hotel offers an intimate experience, owing to its small size and forthcoming owners. Rooms in this historic, 19th-century building retain the wall molding and high ceilings of the stone residence, though are otherwise plain and devoid of decor. The property is particularly well situated for those visiting for Oktoberfest, which is less than a 10-minute walk.

Hotel Uhland

Scene

19th-century building on a quiet, tree-filled street with modern, if simple, interiors

The large brick-and-stone, 19th-century building sits on a residential street with little traffic immediately surrounding it; the property’s exterior, encircled by a cobblestone drive, has a small wood and steel awning which hints at the more updated aesthetic inside. The small, simple lobby retains molding on the white walls, and has a few contemporary features like a frosted glass plate with the hotel’s name; otherwise it is fairly simple and reminiscent of a residential building’s foyer. The hallways have a similarly simple, apartment-like feel. The hotel’s owners are quick to suggest items of interest, as well as dining spots, making for a welcoming atmosphere. Guests range from single travelers to middle-aged couples to families, most of whom are in town for Oktoberfest.

Location

Walking distance from Oktoberfest grounds and main train station

The hotel is situated on a quiet, residential street lined by structures of similar aspect: stone edifices from the late 19th- and early 20th-century. It's a 10- to 15-minute walk (without luggage) to Hauptbahnhof, the main city train station. For those attending Oktoberfest, the fair grounds are less than a 10-minute walk away. Marienplatz is a 25-minute walk or eight-minute drive, and central Munich is about six minutes away by bus (accessible from the Georg-Hirth-Platz station about a block from the hotel). Plenty of restaurants and cafes are within walking distance. Munich Airport is a half-hour drive away.

Rooms

Simple, bright rooms with slightly dorm-like feel, but clean and modern

The tall ceilings of the historic building help give airiness to these fairly plain rooms, all of which are painted in light colors, and some of which have a modern chandelier or floral curtains to brighten up the decor. Otherwise, besides the wall moulding characteristic of the architecture, and a few items of lacquer or laminate furniture, the rooms are relatively simple. Some have recessed ceiling lighting; all have stall showers. Overall, rooms are clean and have comfortable beds -- some have waterbeds. Each has a stocked minibar, plenty of outlets, reading lights by the beds, a safe, and a hairdryer. Doors may be creaky in some rooms.

Features

Lobby furnished with drinks options and reading material; internet terminal

There is a nice array of features in the lobby that establish the hotel's welcoming vibe. There's a pitcher of water with lemon, and a machine with coffee and hot chocolate. The small corner business center is clean and bright, with a single desktop computer for Internet browsing, and a bookshelf stocked with maps and guidebooks. A glass case holds various items for sale, such as colorful knitting yarn. Otherwise, there's a buffet breakfast available daily (some packages include breakfast), and the hotel's location -- convenient to Oktoberfest and the train -- is another top feature. Limited free parking is available, and pets are allowed.
