Bottom Line

Families looking to stretch their dollar and still have a room on the beach will likely appreciate the Dayton House Resort, not only for its location but also its numerous pools, rooms with full kitchens, and several dining options. Room decor is a bit bland and additional amenities -- such as the small fitness center and business center -- are nothing special, but freebies like Wi-Fi and parking add to the value.

Oyster Hotel Review

Dayton House Resort

Scene

A family-friendly hotel that's located on the beach.

The Dayton House Resort doesn't feel like a single hotel. Rather it's a collection of five buildings with a total of 328 rooms. Each building houses its own separate lobby. That means that the layout can be a bit confusing for some guests at first. Guests may have to go to another building if they want to use the pool.

You won't find grand statues or fountains. The hotel's design is pretty basic and functional. But the hotel's three pools (including one with a lazy river tube ride), oceanfront setting, laundry facilities and in-room kitchens make it a great place for families on extended holidays. One of the hotel's most popular features is its lawn area, which has chair and tables where guests can sunbathe or picnic while taking in the ocean views.

The Thomas family has owned the resort since the 1960s and has hosted many families for generations.

Location

Convenient oceanfront location that is close to several restaurants and boardwalk attractions.

Sunbathers and swimmers won't have to go very far at the Dayton House Resort. The property is located on the beach so guests just need to walk out their front doors and cross the lawn area to get some sand and surf.

Dayton is also a 15- to 20-minute walk from the hotel for guests wanting to visit off-site bars and restaurants, and the Skywheel. It's a short 10-minute ride to Waves Waterpark and Broadway at the Beach.

Rooms

Basic and functional rooms with full kitchens

The rooms are spacious and offer many bonuses for families staying for an extended period. The rooms offer full kitchens with microwaves, refrigerators, ovens and cooking utensils. Some rooms also include sliding doors that separate the master bedrooms from the rest of the units, as well as wall beds. All the rooms have balconies and some look out at the ocean.

The design is a bit dated compared to the look at other properties in the area. Picture tropical bed runners and bland wooden furniture.

Features

Several pools, laundry facilities, and a lawn area are some of the highlights.

The hotel has a restaurant on-site that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. It also offers free delivery in the afternoon and evening, and serves breakfast until late. Post breakfast it serves pizzas, pastas, soups, and salads.

Dayton House also houses a pool bar, which closes early. There's a small workout room with older equipment, so guests who want a serious workout may want to get a day pass to a local gym. There's also a small business center with computers and Wi-Fi, but the hotel is really designed for families and not the business traveler. There are a number of convenient facilities at the resort, including an ATM, laundry room and vending machine. There are three pools on-site, including an indoor pool and a pool where you can glide along in an inner tube.
