Bottom Line

The 397-room, four-star Royal Continental Hotel bills itself as a "boutique" property, but in actuality it is the largest convention center in Naples. Located in a quiet pedestrian area by the Bay of Naples, the Royal Continental has a wide variety of facilities for business travelers, including a full theater and exhibition hall, but tourists will also appreciate the location, away from Naples' inner-city crush and surrounded by cafes and restaurants.

Royal Continental Hotel

Scene

Classic and civilized, great views, and surprising vintage design

The Royal Continental Hotel is a great location for a business meeting, convention, or presentation, with 17 meeting rooms, a theater-style auditorium, and room for an exhibit hall. Business travelers will find plenty of spots for networking, negotiating, or escaping work to enjoy the spectacular Bay of Naples views, which can be enjoyed from the bar, three restaurants, pool, and roof garden. Classically decorated, with lots of Italian marble and polished wood, the Royal Continental is sophisticated and modern. Tucked away on a higher floor, however, is a design surprise: The entire floor is decorated in authentic 1960s style in honor of Gio Ponti, the original architect of the hotel. The furniture (vintage) was designed by Ponti, and the rooms feel like a scene from an old Italian movie.

Location

On a quiet, seafront promenade, surrounded by charming cafes

The Royal Continental Hotel sits on Naples' seafront promenade, in front of the ancient (and picturesque) Castel dell'Ovo. The area is quiet and frequented by young Neapolitans out for a romantic stroll, drink, or meal in one of the many nearby cafes and restaurants. Busy downtown Naples is a 15- to 20-minute walk, and most major tourist attractions are a similar distance from the hotel. The ferry and hydrofoil to Capri and the Amalfi Coast leaves from the harbor, which is 30 minutes away on foot.

Rooms

Contemporary design, '60s vintage rooms, mosaic tile

Rooms at the Royal Continental Hotel are modern, open, and clean. Decor is restrained; armchairs and sofas look stiff, not cushy and comfortable. Many rooms have balconies with iron tables and chairs from which guests can enjoy spectacular views of the bay. (Request a sea-view room; it's worth the money.) Rooms on the Gio Ponti floor are decorated in vintage 1960s style to honor the hotel’s original architect; these rooms have authentic period furniture. Bathrooms are pretty, with lots of marble and mosaic tile. Rooms have safes, minibars, satellite TVs, and movies-on-demand.

Features

Seawater pool, Congress Center, underground garage

The Royal Continental Hotel's 10th-floor seawater pool and bar is a lovely place to unwind after a long day of meetings or sightseeing. For more formal dining, there are three restaurants serving local, Mediterranean, and world cuisines. The fitness center includes a solarium and, again, remarkable views to take one's mind off the pain of exercise. The Congress Center includes 17 meeting rooms, a theater, an exhibition hall, and free Wi-Fi. Secure parking is available in the hotel's underground garage.
