Bottom Line

The 833-room Sands Regency Casino Hotel is a lower-middle-range property with a friendly staff and a casino housing slot machines, card tables, and a Bingo parlor. Rooms are spacious and pleasant with carpeted floors, blue accent walls, small flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, but decor is dated and rooms could be cleaner. Several lounges and restaurants are on-site including a 1950s style diner and a prime rib buffet. The fitness center has views of the mountains and a whirlpool; there's also a large seasonal outdoor pool. Some rooms get outside noise from the elevators and neighboring train tracks -- request a room on a high level for the best views and to avoid noise. This property offers one of the most affordable rates in the area.

Oyster Hotel Review

The Sands Regency Casino Hotel

Scene

Dated, lower-middle-range casino and hotel with charming diner

Similar to much of Reno, the Sands Regency Casino Hotel feels a bit dated. The hotel is dressed in shades of orange on the outside, while inside the front desk sits under a neon sign. The casino floor -- a dark area with mirrored ceilings and faded carpeting -- is directly across from the front desk. There are several restaurants at the hotel, but the standout spot is Mel’s Diner, a cute, 1950s style diner where guests can grab one of the booths or line up on the stools at the counter to order MelBurgers, MelFries, and milkshakes. The Arch of Reno Wedding Chapel is on-site for guests looking to tie the knot, and an Elvis impersonator is available to make the day truly special. The seasonal outdoor pool has a colorful deck where guests can lounge in good weather. Overall this is a slightly tired property that isn't winning any design awards, but it does offer solid amenities that will appeal to budget travelers.

The Reno-Tahoe International Airport is around a 10-minute drive, and it’s less than an hour’s drive to Lake Tahoe.

Rooms

Spacious but dated rooms in need of a better scrub

Rooms at the Sands Regency Casino Hotel are spacious and pleasant with flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi, but some elements are a bit dated such as popcorn ceilings, red velvet curtains, and brass-framed pictures. Blue accent walls brighten up the space. Both smoking and non-smoking rooms are available as well as suites with mini-fridges and whirlpool tubs. Guests suggest the staff could pay more attention to cleaning, especially in the bathrooms, which are basic spaces with shower/tub combos.
