When guests walk through the small entrance off Frenchmen Street, they're likely to feel transported into a New Orleans of long ago. The 1860s property has a small, bright green lobby, white-trimmed fireplace, and white painted windows, colorful paintings on the walls, and a beautiful wood banister that leads to the rooms on the second floor. From the lobby, there is an open sitting area -- with a flat-screen TV and more colorful Louisiana art -- where guests can grab breakfast from a countertop with a microwave, and coffee, which is available all day, from a kitchen hutch. Hallways are painted a cheerful pinkish-purple and are permeated with the sounds of live music from the nearby bars, clubs, and restaurants, which might bother some guests. But this is New Orleans.

For aficianados of serious jazz, Snug Harbor is about two blocks down Frenchmen Street, and d.b.a, where you might catch John Boutte or Little Freddie King or the Treme Brass Band, is right next to that. The 2 Riverfront streetcar is one block from the hotel and goes to the Riverwalk Shopping center (12 minutes), Convention Center (16 minutes), and Harrah's Casino (nine minutes). The French Quarter Visitor Center is a 12-minute walk from the Frenchmen. It's a few more minutes to stroll to Cafe Du Monde, Johnny's Po-Boys, the Gumbo Shop, or Court of Two Sisters for jazz and Creole eating. The hotel is a three-minute walk to the French Market Station, where guests can catch tthe Loyola Route 49 by way of Canal Street to historic Preservation Hall on St. Peter Street for a night of more jazz. Bourbon Street is a 13-minute walk. On the other side of Canal Street, the famous St. Charles Streetcar at Carondelet runs Uptown, with stops in the Garden District and Audubon Park, home to New Orleans' zoo.
