Bottom Line

The budget Americana Inn offers some of the lowest rates found in Midtown. It’s conveniently located in the Garment District near several subway lines and many attractions such as the Empire State Building (just a six-minute walk), Bryant Park, and Times Square. The 54 rooms are basic and a bit dreary. They include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and attractive modern sinks, but bathrooms are shared. Kitchenettes, with microwaves and mini-fridges, can be found on every floor. Travelers could also consider the Hotel St. James near Times Square, which offers private bathrooms and free Wi-Fi, for slightly higher rates.

Americana Inn

Scene

A small hotel that draws budget-conscious students, couples, and solo travelers from around the world

Housed in a renovated, red-brick tenement-style building, the Americana Inn sits in the midst of one of New York's busiest areas, drawing guests from all over the world. There's seating in the second-floor registration area, which has a large wood front desk with a marble countertop, and a computer for guests' use. Black-framed contemporary art reproductions and mauve carpeting add doses of color, and there's a rack of tourist brochures to peruse, but the space is somewhat dark and dated, and guests tend not to sit and mingle here.

Location

In the Garment District, near several subway lines and many attractions

The Americana Inn is located in Midtown West's Garment District, home to many delis, as well as wholesale dress and jewelry shops. While it's not an attractive part of the city, it’s one of the busiest, and is a safe and convenient base for tourists near several major attractions, restaurants, and shops. There's a coffee shop right across the street for convenient morning java runs. It's also within walking distance of 15 subway lines, thanks to being close to three major transportations hubs: Times Square, Grand Central, and Bryant Park.

  • Six-minute walk to the Empire State Building
  • Six-minute walk to Bryant Park and the main branch of the New York Public Library
  • 11-minute walk to Grand Central Terminal
  • 12-minute walk to Times Square
  • 15-minute walk to Rockefeller Center
  • 25-minute drive to LaGuardia Airport
  • 40-minute drive to JFK International Airport
  • 40-minute drive to Newark Liberty International Airport

Rooms

Small and generally well-maintained with dated furniture and shared bathrooms

The Americana Inn's 54 rooms are small, and decor, with off-white walls and beige linoleum floors, is a bit bleak. Metal blinds cover the windows, and nondescript framed reproductions hang on the walls. Quilted bedspreads, in colors and patterns that range from solid dark green to yellow and orange stripes, look dated, as do the matching reddish-brown wood headboards and nightstands. Larger rooms have desks and upholstered chairs. All rooms have small closets with luggage racks and hangers. The dark-wood vanities with white rectangular sinks are the most attractive aspect of the rooms. Soap is in dispensers, and towels are provided. Bed options include Singles (one twin), Doubles (full), and Triples (two twins). Views are mostly of the surrounding buildings and the busy streets below (rooms do pick up street noise). Individual temperature controls, phones, and flat screen TVs are standard, and Wi-Fi is available for a fee.

Bathrooms are unisex and shared, but there are several on each floor. These have been renovated, and have beige tile walls, mosaic-tile floors, attractive pedestal sinks with backsplashes and mirrors, and shower/tub combos. Body wash and shampoo/conditioner are provided in dispensers.
