The Econo Lodge Times Square offers 56 tiny rooms in a basic hotel whose big draw is its location; the property is situated about two blocks from its namesake, and is near the Theater District and subways. The rooms have comfortable mattresses in spaces so small it’s a challenge to drag a suitcase around the bed. Generally, cleanliness is at a good level at this value hotel, and the free continental breakfast often garners positive comments. Guests have noted worn carpeting, the occasional lapse in cleanliness, strong cleaning product smells, and that lower floors are noisy; the hotel provides earplugs, but sensitive sleepers may want to request higher floors.
Scene
Value hotel in convenient Midtown location
Because of its proximity to Broadway, the hotel generally attracts tourists, though the occasional business traveler stops here too. Because of the small size of the rooms, several past guests have noted that the hotel is not very suitable for families with children. The lobby is simple and on the plain side, with drop ceilings, checkered granite tiles, a few laminate tables, and basic chairs. An ATM and computer terminal for guest use can be found in the lobby. Overall, this value property doesn't offer much atmosphere, but is a clean and convenient place to stay.
Location
On the corner of 47th and 8th Avenue, less than two blocks to Times Square
For sightseers desiring not only easy access to Times Square and the Theater District, but also Central Park, and transportation options that provide quick and direct access to most downtown locations, this property is hard to beat. It is situated on 47th Street, close to the corner of 8th Avenue, about a block and a half from Times Square. Though the street itself is not a large one, the noise of 8th Avenue traffic, and the spillover from the nearby Theater District makes for plenty of local nighttime activity. There are plenty of drugstores, chain coffee shops, and bodegas within a few blocks, and a host of restaurant options both within the Theater District and on 9th Avenue. The C and E subways are about two blocks away at 50th and 8th, and several other lines are within a few blocks.
Rooms
Very plain and very small rooms with comfortable beds
Lacquered wood headboards and the occasional mass-produced framed print constitute the sole design elements in these plain rooms, the smallest of which do not provide enough space to drag a suitcase through. Larger rooms have a tiled entryway that provides a bit more storage space; all rooms do have a small free standing closet, a wall-mounted air-conditioning unit, a wall-mounted flat-screen TV, a safe, a tiny desk, a shower/tub combo, a makeup mirror, and a hairdryer. Sinks are equally tiny, with very little ledge space. Larger rooms have mini-fridges; all rooms have slightly tired, industrial wall-to-wall carpeting.
Features
Continental breakfast, computer terminal, and free coffee and tea 24/7
A continental breakfast is served daily in the morning on disposable plates and utensils; some have noted the area in which it is served to be too small to accommodate traffic on occasion. The hotel provides free tea, coffee, and ice water around the clock in the lobby, and provides the use of a computer terminal for guests to use the internet.
