The Edge Hotel is a small and stylish two-and-a-half pearl property that opened in 2016 in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood. Located a few minutes' walk from Columbia University Medical Center and three subway lines, the hotel is convenient for hospital visitors as well as tourists who want to be close to The Cloisters and don't mind taking a subway ride to the sights. The 54 compact and modern rooms provide 42-inch flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, and some Manhattan views. However, walls are thin. Amenities include free continental breakfast, free Wi-Fi, a 24-hour grab-and-go kiosk, and a small, but modern, fitness center. The lobby is decorated with local artwork. Travelers wanting to be closer to Midtown could also try the Morningside Inn, a bare-bones property on the Upper West Side that has lower rates.
Scene
Modern boutique hotel with artful accents
Opened in 2016, the Edge Hotel appears modern and stylish from the street. The wood-paneled facade and metal signage form a sleek and functional contrast to neighboring brick apartment buildings. Inside, the compact lobby features a vibrant design that showcases gray floors and walls and a shiny white reception desk. Orange leather benches, stump-like wooden end tables, and a checkerboard decoration behind the front desk add some interest. The lobby and rooms also feature colorful abstract impressionist and screen printed artwork by New York City artists. A snack corner next to the front desk sells coffee and tea as well as cold drinks and various grab-and-go food items. The contemporary meeting room is decorated in gray tones, and is the only other common space, but guests (mostly families, couples, and singles) tend to leave early in the morning to explore the city or head to nearby Columbia Presbyterian.
Location
In Washington Heights, near Columbia Presbyterian and subway lines
The Edge Hotel is located at west 168th Street and is the only hotel in Manhattan's Washington Heights neighborhood. There's a church next door, and other neighbors include residential buildings, a coffee shop, beauty salon, and hardware store. Restaurants, yoga studios, and pharmacies are also within fast walking distance. New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center is only two blocks away, making this a convenient location for visitors in the medical profession or who need to be near the hospital. The subway station on the corner connects to the 1, A, and C lines for access to midtown in about 20 to 30 minutes. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Times Square, and Rockefeller Center are all about 30 minutes by subway. By subway, the West Village is about 30 minutes away; SoHo is 30 to 45 minutes away; and the East Village is about 50 minutes to one hour away. LaGuardia and Newark International Airports are a 30- to 35-minute drive away. JFK International Airport is a 45- to 60-minute drive from the hotel.
