Bottom Line

This branch of the popular Holiday Inn chain fulfills visitors’ brand expectations, with the added bonus of stunning skyline views from the up-and-coming (and budget-friendly) Queens neighborhood of Long Island City. Manhattan’s main tourist sights are easily accessible via seven nearby subway lines. All the staples of a mid-range chain -- comfortable beds, free Wi-Fi, a serviceable restaurant and a small fitness center -- are provided for a very attractive price.

Oyster Hotel Review

Holiday Inn L.I. City Manhattan View

Location

Located across the river from Manhattan, in up-and-coming Long Island City.

The hotel is located on a quiet, industrial block a little removed from the buzz in the more central areas of Long Island City. It’s not the most attractive block in the neighborhood, but it offers a convenient location near six subway lines connecting to Manhattan and Brooklyn. (This area is actually more conveniently located in terms of commuting to attractions than certain areas in the Upper West Side and Downtown.) The N and Q train lines are the closest, and it's about a 10-minute walk to the 7, E, M and R subway lines (all go to Manhattan). The G train, which heads to Brooklyn and stops in uber-hip Williamsburg, is a 20-minute walk away.

There are great restaurants and bars along Vernon Boulevard, located 15-minutes away from the hotel by foot. Several top-notch museums are also within walking distance, including the popular Museum of the Moving Image, and others are a short subway ride away.

Long Island City is the neighborhood in Queens closest to Manhattan. It is located across the Queensboro Bridge from Midtown (at 59th Street), and has been called the new Williamsburg. It’s still quieter than Brooklyn, but rising housing prices have driven thousands of New Yorkers to this up-and-coming neighborhood, bringing it back to life with gleaming skyscrapers on the waterfront, restored historic houses, and beautiful parks offering gorgeous river and Manhattan views.

They're also spacious and have comfortable beds, flat-screen TVs, Keurig coffeemakers, iPod docks, and free Wi-Fi; some, but not all, have mini-fridges or balconies. Reserve a Manhattan View room on a high floor for impressive skyline views. Granite bathrooms have walk-in showers and generic toiletries.

The hotel also has five suites on premises, named after the five boroughs on New York City, each of which features a large balcony. The Manhattan Suite is particularly lovely, and often reserved by wedding parties, with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking its namesake skyline.
